NCL cancelling Roatan (MERGED THREADS)

We just returned Sunday from the NCL Dawn. We had our scheduled port day of 4/8 in Roatan cancelled due to the tragic event of the death of the NCL Pearl Crew member, Jacob. It truly saddens us that this happened and our hearts go out to Jacob's family.

There was an announcement by the Captain of the tragedy and subsequent port cancellation, as well as a letter delivered to our cabin on 4/7 notifying us of the same. The letter stated ".......that the suspect has been arrested......"

We have traveled the world. We have lived overseas. We have visited places that have high crime rates. We are seasoned travelers who always remain vigilant and take necessary precautions at all times. WE LOVE TO TRAVEL. We chose not to live our lives in fear and relish in the fact that we can make our OWN informed decisions of where we chose to or not chose to travel.

It's for these reasons that we feel that WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY to make the decision of whether or not we wanted to still visit Roatan. If we felt Roatan was THAT unsafe to begin with, we wouldn't have booked this particular NCL itinerary. We booked this particular cruise itinerary mainly for the Roatan port, and it's world class diving, as well as Belize City, neither of which we have ever visited. Rather than spending a 2nd day at sea, the Dawn could have pulled in port and each of us be given the choice to either stay on the ship or get off.

We have cruised many times with different lines, including NCL. For the first time ever, we were a bit surprised to find out that we were not given our excursion tickets in our room upon embarkation, as usual. Instead, we were provided waivers for EACH excursion that had to be signed and returned before obtaining our actual excursion tickets. HAS anyone experienced this before on other lines, or is this a new NCL only policy?

In the case of Roatan, they could have done a similar thing by having those that chose to get off the ship sign a waiver that they were aware of the recent events but still elected to see Roatan.

We have to carefully plan our trips, time off, etc.The fact that NCL didn't offer us the option to see Roatan was a huge disappointment.

Many of the posts I've read aren't from actual cruisers who were effected by the Roatan cancellation. If you're out there, please share your thoughts.

When your stop was cancelled, Roatan officials had not replaced the "top cop" who didn't see the need for security at Coxen Hole. They replaced him, and NCL received assurance that security would be beefed up so they resumed calls at Roatan.

I hope this answers your concerns and question. Keep in mind that NCL is very much concerned about your safety as well as that of the other guests and crew.

This event was a very sad event for the family, crew and passengers. When the Captain got onto the PA system and announced that one of his crew was murdered, it sent sadness to all of us that were on the ship. We were able to contribute to a fund for Jacob's family and the crew also had a fund that they put together. I notice that as we were driving back and forth to the west end of the Island ,there was not a Police presence. It is much different in Cozumel, where there are police cars all over the place. Perhaps NCL pulling out of the area will help the Island understand the importance of investing more $ in safety and security. I agree with many of you that crime and violence can happen anywhere. We all need to aware of our surroundings and use caution at all times.
