River Cruise formal night

We are going on the Rhine getaway May 24, on the night of the Captains dinner does the man have to wear a suit coat?

It was not mandatory on our Scenic Tours cruise

We have been on several river cruises. Never had a formal night on them. The Captain's party was dressier than the other evenings. Some wore sports coat, but certainly not all.

We've done 8 or 9 river cruises on 3 lines. GCT, Vantage and Viking. On all......saw no suits, 2 or 3 jacket and ties and maybe a 1/2 dozen or so more sportcoats and open shirts.
