San Diego Military Facilities???

Ladies and gents, first off, I'll go ahead and confess that I've already posted this in the Military Cruisers Forum, but with no takers. So, I'm looking HERE for any information or experience you may have had with military facilities in the San Diego area.

My lady and I are cruising out of San Diego early next year. Neither of us is wild about flying, so we're going to be driving from SE USA to San Diego and return. We're looking at two options, neither of which include flying. We're considering towing a small travel trailer to reduce the cross-country travel costs. The challenge here: what to do with the rig while we cruise. "The rig" is a Chevrolet Silverado 1500, crew cab with full-size bed (8' x 4'); trailer is 20 feet from hitch to bumper, so total length is approx 40'. Our best case scenario is parking the entire rig while still hitched; second-best is being able to park side-by-side. Free parking would be best; low-cost would be second-best. Of course, safety and security are huge considerations.

The second option is to make the cross-country trip in our car--a 2007 Impala--and find a nice, secure Park-n-Cruise hotel with transportation to the cruise port. We've found facilities in both Miami and Tampa where we were able to park at no cost, other than the cost of spending a night at the hotel before we left.

If anybody has any thoughts, I'd like to hear them. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I live in San Diego. The port is right in the middle of downtown. There are many park n cruise options but the title of your post confuses me? Are you asking about military rates or are you asking about lodging on bases?? Both exist here.

You can use some of these ideas for park n cruise hotels:

I don't know of any of the local airport/cruise ship off-site parking lots that allow you to park a travel trailer there.

If you are in the military, you might be able to get travel trailer parking (although probably not the vehicle itself) at one of the on-based lots, including one near the airport at the MCRD or Liberty Station (Navy), Miramar MCAS, or 32nd Street Naval Station. I know they have storage places, but no clue if there are waiting lists to get a spot for short term use or not.

Do you know anyone one in San Diego that would allow them to park on their property?? Street parking for a travel trailer within the city is limited to 72 hours, but if they move it every other day (there is a minimum distance it must be moved) that might work out.

also confuzzled.. why "military" facilities?

there is storage in San Dawg for recreational vehicles, but not necessarily anywhere near the pier. there is one that I know of over by QualCom which is a good 45 minutes away from downtown. not sure if 32nd street has anything.

as for Navy Lodges: no parking of any Rec vehicles and they will not let you park a car unless you are in house. Long term storage lots on base are for deployed personnel or those on OCONUS orders not authorized to bring a POV. parking anywhere else.. not a good idea. the base is already crowded and there is not enough room for the people who work there already, there is nothing for visitors.

far more options if you take out the military aspect altogether and just look for a park n sail package at any of the hotels that offer them. I bet Hotel Circle has a butt ton.

MCRD has storage facilities but I am sure they will be full. I know MCAS Miramar does have space available at a reasonable rate. We store our RV at Miramar and when we stopped by on Friday there was a family doing what you are planning moving into the slot next to us. I cannot post the URL from my phone, Google MCAS Miramar vehicle storage. You need to have a valid ID to use the facilities.

I was actually looking for short-term storage of both truck and trailer, if possible, and I apologize for any confusion I generated. I know (second-hand--son and daughter-in-law of good friends) some Navy folks in San Diego, but we're not good-enough friends to impose on them for trailer storage. Judging from your description of available military RV storage facilities, I think the convenience of having a bedroom always available (that is, dragging the trailer cross-country) will be a non-starter, based on the increased fuel costs and the uncertainty of short-term storage.

I appreciate all your responses. Thanks much.
