Public transportation from NYC to Bayonne

Recommended Posts

Just allow plenty of time...that's a holiday weekend so normally there should be less crowds...however, you never know..

And also check to see that everything is running on time as well!

(And you get the "thanks for doing your homework" award! Sadly, due to budget cuts, all you can have is this: :D;):p)

Thank you for the responses! With all the talk of construction and not having a good idea about what is what, I wanted to make sure it was a possibility.

Also, thanks for the links!!!! and the kudos ;)

ha ha...yes, and the construction? well, it's New Jersey..we call it 'job security... "

Carol 138 is the public transit guru, but she's cooling her heels on a cruise...a repo from Tampa to Europe...making a stop in her home town of Boston. LOL.. guess she can be a tourist!! Hmm...she should have hired herself out as a private guide!!:D

These 2 links or websites should be bookmarked for traveling cruisers for future reference -

NJ Transit - http://www.njtransit.com/hp/hp_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=HomePageTo - including info on Newark Airport, Path, Transit trains & Light Rail, including alerts & schedule changes, etc. Tablets & smartphone users with data access should find it useful on the go as a backup resources.

Port Authority of NY&NJ - http://www.panynj.gov/path/stations.html - station maps of PATH, of interest to those coming from/going to EWR or Newark Airport and Bayonne's Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal.

All metro NY transit systems and networks have scheduled weekend and/or evening maintenance - we always urge & highly recommend that all CC members check these sites for last minute updates, alerts and for interruptions - and, plan/allow extra travel time.

The PATH train ride from NY's 33rd Street / Penn Station to Hoboken, NJ is under 15 minutes and NJ Transit Light Rail connecting to Bayonne's 34th Street, that's closest to Cape Liberty is about 30 minutes. A cab/taxi ride from Bayonne to the Pier itself can vary depending on traffic/road conditions nearby, allow 15 or more minutes. For the entire trip, allow additional time for waiting and doing the transfer and purchasing tickets in the stations before boarding - thus, traveling light with a 22" or smaller roller suitcase or spinner plus a shoulder/backpack or small handbag would be advised.

Otherwise, car service (over taxi) with a quoted flat rate between NY and NJ would be most convenient - coming from NJ into NY, tolls are mandatory and will be high ($15+ for cash lanes) From Manhattan's Midtown East (42nd. Street - Times Square on the "West" side of town would be closer/slighty less) - Carmel's fare quote for tomorrow, Sunday morning to Bayonne Cruise Terminal is $47 for a standard sedan, $52 for a deluxe sedan and $60 for a luxury sedan - it will fit 3 pasengers and 3 pc. of luggage (plus a personal bag, as defined by domestic airlines) - availability is SOLD out for $47 and $52, minivan for 5 to 6 is also quoted at $60 for the trip + tips, of course. Book EARLIER for all busy holiday weekend.

For anyone flying into/out of Newark Airport in the coming months - one of EWR's 2 major runways is being shut down for maintenance, repairs & re-surfacing, etc. Bottom line - expect delays on the ground and in the air flying, especially when weather conditions and visibility are hampered or less than ideal (HINT, HINT - flying in same day as the embarkation for the cruise to EWR, please check your options & reconsider) Need more info - come over to Flyertalk for details ... :D

Happy Cruising & Bon Voyage !

Thanks! Appreciate the time frames for each leg - good to know. Since we travel with carryons, we are lucky to have the option of public transportation or car service - am balancing out the options, a lot will ride on the location of the hotel I book.

Excellent advice posted here by the previous contributors. I'll just add my two cents' worth.

I ride the PATH train and NJ Transit Light Rail system frequently, and my wife & I have done the trip to Bayonne, with luggage, on several occasions, without any problems. The cost of the PATH/ Light Rail/ Bayonne taxi combination is significantly less than the cost of a car service from Manhattan.

Just a few details about transferring from the PATH train to the Light Rail at Hoboken:

The Hoboken PATH station is underground. There are several different exits by stairways up to ground level, but with luggage, you might want to use the elevator. When you exit the PATH train, walk forward, go through the turnstiles, and immediately turn left; you'll see the elevator just past the ticket machines.

Exit the elevator at ground level and turn left. Walk into the Hoboken train terminal (right in front of you at this point), then continue along the main concourse to the far end of the station, just past track 18. (You should see signs for the NJ Transit Light Rail along the way.)

Ticket machines for the Light Rail are located near the entrance to the Light Rail platforms. The machines take cash as well as debit or credit cards. Before going onto the platform, validate your ticket by sticking it into the little orange machine at the platform entrance and then removing it.

Enjoy the ride!

PostCaptain - bravo & kudo for the excellent details on the PATH & LR Stations @ Hoboken.

For OP & others sailing in the future "stumbling on this post" - can you give a rough/recent estimate of the cab/taxi/car service fare between the Bayonne LR Station and Cape Liberty - or, should they call them directly for fare info?

By the car or shuttle pricing based on per person/luggage rules?

There's another post from a different cruiser flying into JFK, possibly staying in Manhattan & then wanted to find a "best" way to go to Cape Liberty via mass transit transfers.

I don't recall the exact fare for the taxi, but I think it's in the neighborhood of $8 to $12 (per car, not per passenger), plus tip. When we last did it, there was no extra charge for luggage.

It's the shortest leg of the entire journey, distance-wise--about two miles--but the most expensive.

The entrance to the Cape Liberty port facility (formerly the Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne) is directly across the road (route 440) from the Light Rail station (34th St, Bayonne), so it's a straight shot from the station to the cruise terminal. The driver can't get lost, but there are likely to be backups. Also, unlike the case with many other cruise terminals, there is no pedestrian access.

I believe that when Royal Caribbean/Celebrity first sailed out of Bayonne, circa 2004, they ran a free shuttle bus between the Light Rail station and the cruise terminal. However, that service only lasted a year or two before it was withdrawn.
