getting to southhampton

Recommended Posts

We are sailing out of Southhampton on July 12 on the Dawn Princess.

What would be the best way to get there? We are flying in from Nice France, is it best to fly to Gatwick? Once there are there shuttles ? Any suggestions on getting there and prices, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Either Gatwick or Southampton worked for us, it really depends on the airline.

When we fly in, we generally just get a taxi, just as easy, if you want private door to door service. We negotiate a price with the driver before getting in the taxi. I think it is about 1.5 hr drive.

Another option is to use Smithtotheairport.com to reserve a private car pick up at the airport. We usually use this service when we are getting off at Southampton. You can look them up on line, it has been a couple of years since we have used. So not sure of price. You do need to pay in England pounds on day of service.

Flybe offer two/three indirect flights daily to Southampton from Nice, via Paris.

The 2-hour layover in Paris suggests this is a change of airplane, not just a bus-stop.

Flybe is a budget airline, their pricing is flexible according to demand - prices are generally very much better further out. You do need to run thro a dummy booking to check for add-ons, particularly luggage.

Southampton airport is a 20-min taxi ride from any cruise terminal, taxi rates from about £14 pre-booked to £20 from the rank.

Or a 10 minute £3 p/p train ride to Southampton central station then a £5 to £8 taxi ride.

Or a bus service that takes about three weeks ;)

Alternatively fly direct from Nice to London Heathrow or London Gatwick, various airlines. Then

- from Heathrow by direct National Express coach about £18 p/p, 2hrs. Or private transfer with http://www.smithsforairports.com or http://www.westquaycars.com about £90 the car. About 90 minutes.

- from Gatwick by direct train or direct Nat Express coach about £20 p/p. Or private transfer (same operators, they're Southampton-based) about £120 the car. 2.5 hrs by coach, 2 hrs by train or car.

JB :)
