Balcony Smokers: What will you do before October 9th?

  1. 1. Balcony Smokers: What will you do before October 9th?

    • I'm going to smoke till the cows come home no matter what my neighbors say!
    • I will be considerate of my non-smoking neighbors and not smoke in front of them.

Please explain why and how I've embarrassed myself so I know which shade of red I should turn.

For starters, smoking has been and will continue to be restricted and this poll is just plain silly. All the arguments for smoking just does not work anymore. The health and welfare of employees far outweigh the minority. Not a single argument made on any of these boards merit a good argument and most are just old and tired arguments. This entire thread just proves it. Time to give it up and live with this!

Nobody is arguing the merits of smoking. They're venting about a policy change that they're unhappy with. You would probably see that if you'd take off your cape and mask and stop beating your chest for a minute.

Looking forward to my Aug cruise!

Not a cigarette smoker, but will be smoking as many illegal Cuban cigars as I can on my "Private" balcony til I cough up my left lung, sipping on gallons illegal Moonshine that we've snuck onboard til my liver gives out, gorging on all the fatty food pilfered from the dining room til I puke it all out before we get back to port.

Thank god we got "Free" healthcare now...

I actually would prefer to differentiate between non-smokers and anti-smokers.

I would also differentiate between being anti-smoker and anti-smoke. Just because my daughter and I have difficulty being around smoke doesn't mean I am against smokers or take smoke personally. I have never really encountered a rude or hostile smoker. They are just regular people with a habit that I don't happen to share, but I don't consider myself to be anti-smoker.

If the current rules allow smoking on balconies, then smokers have every right to do so, and non-smoking neighbors don't really have a right to complain. When the rules change later this year, they will still have the right to smoke in designated areas, and I would hope that non-smokers would have the courtesy to avoid those areas if they have a problem with smoke. No smoker smoking in a designated area is ever being rude.

You do understand, immaterial of the differences between an ecig and a cig, that ecigs are classified as cigs and follow the same rules on Carnival?

Yes they follow the same rules on Carnival but not the rest of Carnival Corp.

Here’s the data on how Carnival Corp has applied Vaping on their cruise lines.

Princess – Vaping permitted in the cabin and designated smoking areas, but not on the balcony

Seabourn - Vaping permitted in the cabin, in designated smoking areas, and on some ships, on the balcony

Holland America, Cunard, P&O, Costa, AiDA- Vaping permitted in the cabin, in designated smoking areas, and on the balcony

So then why is Carnival’s policy (after 9 Oct 2014) – Vaping not permitted in the cabin or on the balcony and only in designated smoking areas.

I feel the love. I guess they care more about us than the other Carnival Corp lines (Princess, Seabourn, HAL, Cunard, P&O, Costa, AiDA).

The poll might of had a more favourable result in numbers if the "Yes" option was:

"I will be considerate of my non-smoking neighbors, and when asked politely, I will not smoke on my balcony when they are on theirs."

Instead of:

"I will be considerate of my non-smoking neighbors and not smoke in front of them."

Polls like this, only give smokers more of a bad name. Your poll does opposite of what is intended. Smokers just need to deal with the facts, that their habit, is no liked, and they just need to go to a private place, and puff away.

I agree! They are embarrassing themselves at this point. Moreover, they are

becoming an embarrassment to this website.

The new smoking policy https://www.goccl.com/~/media/Files/Irman/bookccl/shipboard_knowledge/SmokingPolicy.htm

is here to stay. They need to GET OVER IT, they need to ADAPT and

move forward.

:)

I don't understand these comments at all. I don't smoke, but I certainly understand that smokers just had a major change to their upcoming vacations, with extremely short notice.

If people can't talk about their frustration with a cruise line policy on a cruise discussion board, where should the conversation take place? How is it embarrassing to want to discuss a major change to an expensive vacation? Why is talking about smoking policies an embarrassment, yet every day we have endless threads about how to smuggle booze and cheat the system? Is this topic less worth of discussion than a thread about an inadequate towel animal or the quality of the coffee?

I'm shocked and saddened at the attitude of some people towards SMOKERS -- not smoke, but the people who smoke. Perhaps those who are so quick to pass judgment are perfect and have never had to fight weight, or an addiction, or faced any kind of a struggle in their lives. Surely if they had they would be a little more empathetic towards their fellow cruisers who just had a very unexpected wrench thrown in their plans.

Maybe it's just luck of the draw, but in 20 cruises with balconies (on all but 2 of them smoking on balconies was permitted) I've never been bothered by a neighbor's smoke. The only place I've ever found it offensive and had to leave was inside in an enclosed area such as the casino, and that's going to get a lot worse after October 9th.

I am not a smoker and have been bothered by smoke on my balcony on two different cruises. One of them, we would just go inside for a bit and then check to see if they were done and they usually were. The other one, it was the people next to us and we weren't able to be out there at night with out very strong cigarette smells, so we just stayed out on deck or in our cabin once we came back.

It never occurred to me to ask the smokers to stop. They were in an area where smoking was allowed. Are many of you or have many of you been asked to put your cig out?

In the interest of full disclosure, I am happy about the change as I really hate the smell.:o

Even though I am a non-smoker, I find the results of this poll most interesting. As of now, it’s pretty much neck and neck between those who will smoke no matter what, verses those who won’t. What this means, to me anyway, is that nearly half of smokers – on CC at least – have no intention of being considerate to non-smokers.

This is much higher than I thought it would be.

It would be interesting to poll smokers about if they plan on being considerate AFTER the October date.

I must be having comprehension reading problems. I thought this poll was asking about what you would do now to when the rules change in October. Not how many people plan to break the rules after restrictions go into effect. Am I missing something?

They'll all be in the casino after Oct. 9th. You may not want to go in there after that date. ;)

He asked what smokers would do now knowing that the rules are changing in October.

My disappointment with Carnival has nothing to do with my manners. :)

The poll on this thread asks what you will do BEFORE October 9th. This is BEFORE the restrictions. Doesn't ask if people plan to break the rules after that date. Now I do think the poll could have been worded differently but at least it is not encouraging people to ignore the restrictions!

Don't see how it gives anyone a bad name. It is merely a question of whether a smoker, prior to Oct 9th, will exercise their right (as granted by Carnival) to smoke on their balcony irrespective of their neighbor's wishes or not.

If you had taken the time to actually read the poll, this poll references what smokers will do PRIOR to the new rules take affect. Thanks for playing though. :D

Non- smoker here and wondering what your vote is? You started the poll but I don't see your vote. ;)

I did not vote because I am not cruising on a balcony with Carnival prior to the new rules taking affect. I did my best to word it very specifically that way and personally, I'm a little surprised at the results.

But, if I were cruising on a balcony prior to Oct 9th, I would, as always, follow Carnival's rules to the letter. My balcony neighbors do not set the rules, Carnival does. So if I wished to smoke on my balcony, I would. If I did not wish to smoke on my balcony, I would not. My neighbors wishes would not come into play as long as I am following Carnival's rules.

Until Oct 9th, smokers do have that right and that has never stopped a non-smoker from complaining about said right. :D

And see, I thought it would have gone the other way in regards to the poll. That more smokers would exercise their right (prior to Oct 9th) immaterial of what their neighbors want. Being inconsiderate (in your opinion) is not a violation of rule or law. After Oct 9th, being considerate is immaterial, a balcony smoker will be in violation of the rules.

Actually, I have always preferred being on deck. Nice scenery, wonderful breeze, and a chance to make new friends (at least for a week).

Of course not. I never knowingly violate the rules (unless someone's safety is at stake) and expect the same of others. I would never encourage someone to violate the rules and help enforce rules when possible (call me a narc if you wish but rules are meant for everyone, everywhere, not just a select few, some times).
