3 weeks to go til our first cruise, eek so excited!

One of ports of call is Gibraltar - have been looking at cable car tickets and you can get a combined ticket for the nature reserve. Does anyone know if it works out cheaper buying online or just the same from the ticket office? It says if you buy online you need to swap your voucher for your ticket from the Spanish side - would we need to take our passports off the boat then?

Was going to p/copy passports and only carry copies with us and leave passports on the boat in case they got stolen?

Can you also use UK £ in Gibraltar or even Euros?

Advice much appreciated

Sorry I can only answer the currency question.

Pound Sterling is the main currency of Gibraltar but the majority do accept Euros as well. It's probably best just to check with the cashier before you by - I don't envisage many saying no, but it's always best to check.

You can exchange your e-ticket at the ticket office at the Cable Car. The mention of swapping the tickets at the fronteir is for those entering Gibraltar from Spain. The online price does look a bit lower than the turn up price although it doesnt appear to give you any priority getting onboard the chairlift.

Im not sure what would happen re refunds if the chairlift is closed due to high winds (it was the first time we went). Also, be aware the middle station where the Apes Den is located is closed April to Sep so you cannot visit on your trip.

Not sure how many of you there are however you might want to weigh up the 2 hour taxi tour available as you exit the quay. In May I think it was £35 pp however if you walk to the cable car to the junction where Main Street becomes Trafalgar Road, taxis wait there by the small gardens and they were offering the same trip for £20 pp which includes all admissions. If you have a taxi tour then the driver is your guide and can give you lots of info plus they know which apes can be approached and if you are up for it may let you pose with one for a photo (AYOR).

Whichever way you do it you will have time to wander back through main street for refreshments or shopping before heading back to the ship.

Hope all this helps.

Also, the official currency is the Gibraltar Pound. Its exchangeable on a par with pound sterling so no need to bother buying any.

Be very careful regarding currency; the currency is sterling however be careful as some change they will give you is in their own Gibraltarian sterling and cant be used in the UK.

Regarding your excursion it will be a lot cheaper than booking the experience via P&O.

Safe Journey

I've had the odd Gib (and Manx) pound coin in change in the UK before. Trouble is, the coins are hardly different from the GBP.

A little OT: No doubt the new pound coin will only add to the hassle as its noticeably different from the current one. I presume that Gibraltar will get the new one the same time as us?

Gibraltar coins can be used in the UK. Even if you pay in at a bank and tell them there are Gibraltar coins in there, they accept them. In theory they may not be allowed, but in practice you can only tell Gib coins from British ones by reading the little letters on the side, and no-one's going to learn all 16 different designs of UK pound coins just in case they get one from Gibraltar.
