Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Tough to enjoy oneself if smokers are breaking the rules that cause others to be uncomfortable or in danger ( as in flicking butts on another balcony)

Key word is " breaking the rules". Smoke all you want but don't do it where you are not supposed to

I follow rules so why should the smokers do the same in the casino?

Why stop? Read the posts and many smokers are all suggesting ways to break the rules. Now they are the ones that should stop.

Please just put me on ignore if you choose but if you are implying that non smokers should just ignore it when smokers threaten to smoke on balconies and crowd the casino then the one to stop is not me it is you.

But yes it is best to just keep our head in the sand than to stand up for ones rights

The whole country seems to feel that way apparantly too

But nonetheless the ship rules favor the non smokers.

I don't make those rules btw. However I will follow them because they are not stupid rules and only benefit cruisers not hurt them

Seems to me this thread is getting much better amongst smokers and non smokers except one person who shall remain nameless

Let's give ourselves a pat on the back. It's taken 54 pages to somewhat get along but it's getting there.

I think we should all give ourselves a round of applause for letting this thread break 1100 posts! :D

The real issue is all the smokers threatening to break the rules. It's not the people that are considerate it is the inconsiderate ones causing the problems

I have made some good suggestions as to how to accommodate the smokers.

I didn't know throwing smokers overboard was considered a good suggestion to accommodate smokers! :p

Actually, there are a LOT of people breaking rules (smugglers and CHOGS just to name a few), there just aren't smokers breaking the rules (currently). Down the road, quite possibly and truthfully, wouldn't surprise me either considering the number of people that break other rules.

I meant stop with the complaining. I'm not breaking any rules and have no intention of breaking any rules so I don't know what your complaining about. Why don't you wait and see what happens when the new rules take effect. Your complaining even BEFORE something if anything happens. Your preparing yourself to start reporting people who haven't even done anything yet. Who said they are stupid rules? Rules will be followed I believe by smokers. I'm sure there will be a couple who don't follow them and they will be dealt with by NCL not you or other passengers. Your arguing just to argue when nothing has happened.

I'm a smoker and plan on smoking in the casino. I will see whose sitting next to me and see if it bothers them. I'm confident we can be adults and work out something that will work for both myself and a non smoker sitting beside me. But understand you have no right to demand a person smoking in the casino can't.

Hold on a second now. How about you pointing out which posts state smokers are going to break the rules? Granted, there are a couple that said they will still smoke on their balcony but those were far and few in between......hardly the many you are trying to claim. So feel free to show the post number of those many that are planning to break the rules.

She's preparing herself lol

I changed my cabin to balcony 8780 right next to the waterfront I have no need to break any rules with smoking on the balcony I'm right next to smoking access.

I have an inside on the Sun myself one deck below the pool deck so just up one flight of stairs and I'm there.

Personally, I think she's trying to drive a point that doesn't need to be driven on top of actually trying to claim the rules are more strict than NCL has written them out to be. Such as the "must be seated" bit.......nothing in NCL's casino's rules states a gambler must be seated or that more than one person can't play a machine together (think husband and wife, not half of deck 7). I'd like for her to find out what the actual facts are and stay within those facts and get off the drama bandwagon. ;)

People don't have to be seated to play. I myself sometimes like to stand while playing roulette can't reach all the numbers otherwise if seated or even at a machine if my legs cramp up I stand for a bit. A lot of my time is spent in the casino smoking or not smoking but yes playing.

Bingo...You got smoking banned on balconies.

Smokers tossing blame like yourself,f need to look at other smokers if you insist on casting blame. The slobs and inconsiderate among you...the ones who toss their butts all over the place including off the balcony into the sea (or back onto the ship when they wind is blowing that way)....THEY are the ones to blame.

smh.

If this was a war, it seems to me you are battling yourselves.....

I'm a very ex-smoker, having only smoked for a few years before I turned 20 and now having been smoke-free for several decades. While reading this thread for quite some time, I thought I'd put in my two cents again. There are obviously a lot of emotions expressed on both sides of the smoking issue and it's bothersome when some people get nasty or express hostility and anger - and I've seen it on BOTH sides, non-smokers and smokers. For the most part, though, I've been awed by the sensitivity and kindness expressed by most of the posters. I've already told my sad tale, having lost my beloved brother to smoking related lung cancer, a mere week after he turned 56. It was a horrible way for him to die and just as bad to watch him die, 11 months after his diagnosis. I understand the addiction to the toxins in nicotine and fully appreciate the difficulty people have dealing with the health related realities. Because it is an addiction, I'm sensitive to their needs and see their point of view. Cigarettes won't be banned because of the tax advantage to the government, but because the world has changed in other ways - no smoking in restaurants, government buildings, offices, heck anywhere really - the addicted are undergoing emotional changes precipitated, I think, by some fear. If you smoke, you already know that you think you like it only because the toxins stimulate your endorphins (much the same way chocolate or sex stimulates your endorphins and chocolate or sex is healthier). You won't WANT to quit because you think you like it and you think you like it because of your addiction. It's reality so accept it. If you're an older woman you already see what it does to your skin, how it accentuates the lines in your face and changes your pallor as you age. You don't CHOOSE to smoke. Only your first cigarette was a choice. And if you believe that it's your right to smoke, know that your right stops where you step on someone else's right to breathe clean air. If you exhale, you're impinging on others. Anyway, in terms of the cruise industry, everyone's dollar is coveted and I'm sure the cruise business is working on ways to keep everyone happy. It's an expensive game. Vegas has the money and their investment in technologically advanced filtering systems has reaped benefits. Some day this will probably be the way to go for the cruise industry. I don't like gambling in a smoke filled casino. I can't breathe, my contact lenses dry out and my lungs hurt. It's MY reality. This is an important thread and I appreciate everyone's point of view. It will be interesting to see how the smoking/no smoking issue plays out in the travel industry.

I've read much of this thread, and have seen very few people planning to break the rules.

I'm not sure why you seem to think they are. Maybe you just want people to break the rules so it can prove your point, whatever that actually is, but wanting it doesn't make it true.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm one of those people who never had a problem quitting. I could pick them up and put them down whenever I wanted. Have gone years w/out any, to suddenly having one while in a bar with friends. When my grandmother died 10 years ago from COPD, I mostly "quit". I put that in parenthesis because I would still have one every now and then, until 2010 when I put them down for good. I was never a heavy smoker, and like I said, could go months (and years) w/out one without issue. Weird, huh? Anyway, I agree that smoking will never be banned 100% by the government - they make way too much money off of it. I do think it will be mostly banned from anywhere indoors, eventually.

I find this post highly amusing because you want me to keep my head in the sand and not speak up for my rights. Smoking is allowed in the casino. All I did was offer tips to smokers to work WITHIN NCL rules. As I said if you don't like that perhaps you should find an alternative activity

Actually my dilemma is if I am sitting at a non-smoking table (sometimes I can only get a seat at non-smoking) or if I am sitting at a smoking table with a non-smoker that would be bothered if I smoke, I have the dealer give me a marker and sit out a couple of hands while I retreat to the smoking section (or step away from the table), smoke my cigarette, then return. I'm wondering if NCL will continue to accomodate in this manner. I don't think they would save my seat long enough for me to run upstairs to deck whatever, smoke, then come back down

The last several posts have stated nothing but fact (unless you have anything in writing to disprove them). If you can disprove them, I for one would like to see said proof (such as people must be seated to gamble).

It's interesting how you attempt to take the high road when there is no road that high! :D

This one I can help with (having spent an absurd amount of time in the casino)... at table games, players must be seated to play.

I like you spend a lot of time in the casino. Lots of times I stand while playing roulette because I can't reach the numbers never had someone tell me I had to sit down. Also craps there are no chairs how you gonna sit? Blackjack? Yes you must be seated as well as other card table games. And slot machines you can stand if you choose. I prefer to sit but sometimes stand for a bit when my legs cramp sometimes some seats are very close and are uncomfortable. I have never in any casino cruise or land been told I have to sit (not including card table games as i stated above.
