Almost left in Nassau.....

I was on the Fascination 7/5-10 and in Nassau there was a family that almost missed the ship. The gangway had already been pulled in. Does anyone know why the were late? Also a ship staff member handed the man an envelope before he could come aboard. Any idea what that might have been? Just curious......

I can guess what was in the envelope. Having seen several people left over the year, Carnival always leaves an envelope with a representative for the people left behind. If they had left passports in their safe, those are retrieved and left to make returning to the US easier. If no passport, I suspect it's contact information to help the passengers get home, and documentation from the cruise line. I had asked an officer about the envelope years ago (after seeing the first people left) and that was what I was told.

I would ask this question on your roll call.

You probably should have asked while still on board.

There could be any number of reasons why they were so late - fell asleep on the beach, did not give themselves enough time to get back, taxi had a flat, lost a bunch in the Atlantis casino and wanted to win it back. Who knows? It will all be speculation on here. There are several youtube videos of pier runners - only some of them successful in getting on the ship. I remember one where you could see the couple (loaded with bags from shopping) where the man was running like hell, and the wife was just plodding along, taking her own sweet time. She even stopped to take a picture of the ship!

As to the envelope, I am sure that nobody had gone to their stateroom to get passports for them. It could have been just a form letter outlining the consequences to them if they had not made it. I hope that I never find out the hard way!

The CD on the Pride told us they do this at the Q&A. "What happens if the ship leaves without you?" is a question they must get all the time.

Where do they get people's passports from? Do they riffle through their things?

I always bring mine off the ship with me, so the crew members would never find one in my room.

They would have to box your stuff up anyway to put it off at disembarkation. Once you've missed sailaway you forfeit your privacy.

They open the safe. If you hide them elsewhere in your cabin, then you'd likely be out of luck. I doubt they'd waste their time searching for them.

We've always been told to leave our passports in our room safe. If a passenger is not onboard, the ships security personnel will enter the room, open the safe and retrieve any passport/identity papers and leave them with the port agent to be given to the missing passengers.

They will only open the safe to look for such documents. They will not "riffle" through anything else in the room.

As to actually packing up the missing passengers things, that's usually only done when it's confirmed that they will be remaining in that port (like a medical emergency, or being put off the ship), or once back at the departure port.

Go to your room search open safe if necessary .They make every effort to help if you are stranded in a foreign country.

When do they enter the cabin ? 30min., 15min., 5min. before sailing. I see many people getting on at the last min. So if there are 15 passengers missing 10 min. before sailing they can enter the cabin, get the passports, rush down to the gangway and hand off PB's. They must have it down to a science. :D

FWIW--on Carnival the vessel's master-of-arms is the only one that can open the safe and only in the presence of a security officer. I found this out on my wedding day when our safe battery died. We got our jewelry out just in time and had to verify that everything was accounted for.

We were told to be back on the ship by 4:30 and the ship would depart at 5. They arrived on the pier about 10 minutes after 5.

The ship's Master decides when to leave and there are several factors involved as to how long to wait past the scheduled time. The Captain was fully aware passengers were missing when he left just 10 minutes late.

Once the port agent determined if the stranded passengers were not rejoining the ship at a later port of call he would advise the ship and then they would pack up the cabin. There is always a chance you could travel on your own to the next or further port of call instead of the final point of debarkation.

I love to watch for Pier Runners. Our Pride trip that unexpectedly went to Bermuda instead of Canada had two ship officers with binoculars run out to the end of the pier looking for a returning private excursion boat. The had the infamous envelope in hand. Passengers returned by taxi though.

FWIW
