Car rental in Italy, July 22-25, 2014

Anyone have tips on how to cancel a car rental in Italy (with refund) during July/August months? Our TA booked a car rental, didn't inform us that a 'van' is non-refundable in July and August. notarose@me.com

I agree! I've rented plenty of vehicles in Europe and have never been faced with a no-cancellation policy. IMHO not informing you the rental was non-cancellable is a big no-no. Pressure the TA to atone for his errors.

 

What rental company did your TA book? Try bypassing the TA by going directly to the rental company. If they won't allow you to cancel with a refund, ask if you can get a credit toward a future rental.

Most European car hire companies refund so far in advance. Additionally, they will have no problem re renting the vehicle in July/August. What is the destination and the company?

 

Ask your travel agent for the rental T&Cs. If you had not seen a copy of it and you had not been advised of the T&Cs I think it is the travel agent that has made the mistake.

Considering the rental is for a "van" I'm not surprised it's non-refundable - especially this close to the requested time frame (22-25 Jul).

 

With that said though the TA blew it when they didn't inform the client. You need to go back to TA and escalate it up if required.

Not sure why anyone would use a TA to book a rental car these days. There are so many details involved in rentals that I cannot imagine leaving it to a third party. We routinely rent cars in Europe and have never had a non-refundable deal. In fact, I am not sure where you can even get a non-refundable rental. Even the prepaid rentals from decent companies like Autoeurope are refundable with enough notice.
