Reykjavik car rental skinny

Can't seem to get a clear answer.. does anyone know if car rental agencies have a desk at the cruise port (Skarfabakki- the large ship port)?

 

All agencies list Keflavik Airport as their pick up location. But, that's an hours drive from port. One did say, they have a desk in summer months, or offer a shuttle.

 

Trying to plan a driving route if we "have" to pick up/drop off at airport, and to rob a bank to pay for a taxi if they don't have a shuttle…………………...:roll eyes:

I did search 'rental car skarfabakki' at Google and found several: National, Alamo, Europecar, Avis - at some reservation pages you need to select City rather than airport

Sixt had the best rates for our needs as is picking us up at the ship.

Check out some of the small independent companies that are specific to Reykjavik. Many of them don't have a central office at all and just pick you up at your hotel and drive you out to their rental lot. Many of then could probably just pick you up at the port instead. Plus, a lot of them are much less expensive than the big international chains.

 

We rented from Átak, but a quick search for "Reykjavik car rental" will turn up dozens.

Europcar provided excellent service when I was in Reykjavik for an overnight port stop last September.

 

They set up a remote location with a mobile office and they probably had 40 or so pick-ups on our sailing on the Legend of the Seas. It was directly past the customs booth ship-side.

 

While I was able to book on an international website and get quite a good deal, it was much easier to understand the procedure after giving them a quick call. While the volcanic ash insurance was a unique add-on, the price was excellent at our time or rental.

 

There were several other companies present, but it did seem that Europcar had the best set up with many vehicles and the remote office they had set up.
