Vision class Duck Tails

Recommended Posts

The only thing I know about the "duck tails" is they are supposed to make a more efficient hull profile and from that more fuel efficient. Perhaps they figured the EN would be on a low distance itinerary and it would not be cost effective to install one. Just a guess. Actually I had not noticed they did not have one added.

In the case of the Vision class ships balconies were added (amongst other things) which changed the weight distribution of the ship. The ducktail was needed, which weighs 276 tons, to help to balance out that additional weight as well as provide more full efficient hull.

Enchantment didn't need the ducktail as the added section was designed such that it didn't drastically change the weight distribution.

I agree. I talked with one of the engineers on Rhapsody about the sponson, and one fo the reasons was the extra weight added as part of putting the restaurants in Viking Crown.

Grandeur as sister of Enchantment also has no duck tail. Vision and her sister Rhapsody got a duck tail but no additional balconies. This is only for fuel efficency. The first pair Legend and Splendour got both, new balconies and duck tail due to additional weight. This makes Grandeur clearly the best looking ship of all six Vision class ( as Enchantment looks too long due to the stretch).
