COLLEYBERRY Posted September 20, 2014 #228 Share Posted September 20, 2014 (edited) Well what do you know ..ya learn something new every day....my pot knowledge is quite limited lol...sooo I asked my actor boy son...if tobacco is often used with marijuana...he said yes especially if the person smokes ...it apparently burns better and the smell is somewhat masked,,the French often use more tobacco and less marijuana (more expensive in France and charges are greater) this is called a French joint. Never really thought I would ever have this conversation with my son ...he was perplexed his mother wanted to know how marijuana was used lol..looked relieved when I explained it was a Cruise Critic thing .:D Edited September 20, 2014 by COLLEYBERRY
babyher Posted September 20, 2014 #229 Share Posted September 20, 2014 You definitely did not have to hang out with any particular crowd to smell it. Then or now. That's some kind of backhanded inference that those who know the smell hung out with the wrong crowd. Well I went to high school at a very upscale private school with the children of the best families , and I can say I never smelled marijuana at any of their parties.................................... lolane1 Posted September 20, 2014 #230 Share Posted September 20, 2014 Ready to get flamed. I have just booked an expensive aft balcony on Princess traveling solo. It all came down to the money and not having to worry that my balcony experience would be ruined by smoking. My last cruise was on HAL this summer and fortunately we had no smokers around in the area. But, last Christmas I was on Norwegian and it was a nightmare. (smokers smoking in the room next door and on the balcony constantly) It's a shame because I really liked HAL. Part of me is saddened but those are the breaks. So, for now, it's back to Princess. PS, I am not on a campaign to get HAL to ban smoking. I am just sorry that, for now, I can't take the chance when bigger bucks are on the line. :(

And as to that smell - I mentioned earlier about a grow op in my area that the RCMP still haven't found. It vents in the middle of the night now and then. Last night was one of those - I awoke to the sickening smell throughout the bedroom and had to get up and close windows, turn on a fan and put my head under the sheet to try to get back to sleep. Few here knew anything of what I had been living the last 2 years. I didn't tell many. I also feel a little naivty in life is not always a bad thing. There are some things in life I hope I never learn about. Our curiosities branch in many directions and we are not all the same. I don't want birds eye view into the drug world. Not to say I necessarily think marijuana is so terrible as I do not. I voted to approve it for medicinal use in MA/ to non-criminalize it. ;) Of all the work law enforcement has to do, I don't think arresting people for two or three joints is a priority. Sow There Posted September 20, 2014 #241 Share Posted September 20, 2014 (edited) ... Not to say I necessarily think marijuana is so terrible as I do not. I voted to approve it for medicinal use in MA/ to non-criminalize it. ;) Of all the work law enforcement has to do, I don't think arresting people for two or three joints is a priority. Now we're getting somewhere. I agree that no one should be arrested for smoking a joint or two. Similarly I don't think anyone should be arrested for smoking a cigarette or two. But just think how our laws are contradictory. I can be arrested (misdemeanor) for smoking a cigarette outdoors within 20 feet of a building entrance in Berkeley CA but I can smoke all the joints I want in that same proximity. Worse, if I make less than $30k a year (their defined poverty level), the City of Berkeley will provide me with free joints. But I can't buy cigarettes with food stamps. Getting back on the smoking on a HAL ship topic, there will always be a conflict between those who smoke and those who are affected emotionally by smelling cigarette smoke. I smoke a pipe in my own home. I carried a small pack of Captain Black tobacco in my briefcase on a commuter train. I sat down and opened my briefcase to pull out some papers I planned to read. My seatmate went into a major hissy fit because she smelled the tobacco, called the conductor and tried to have me kicked off the train. The conductor was holding back on his laughter and told the woman that I was doing nothing at all wrong. I have the same attitude about the admittedly less than pleasant smell of cigarette smoke as I do about many perfumes; especially those that are used to cover up an offensive body odor...but neither of these fall under the same principle that Sail enunciated, "...I don't think arresting people for two or three joints is a priority." I think it might be of some comfort to you to know and understand you are absolutely and definitely not alone - many others here (because we are a community and like the "real world" death, tragedy and illness and suffering in other ways happens in a community) suffer through living hell from time to time. We all choose to share as much or little as we wish. Personal choices as in most things. Personal choice whether to smoke on a balcony, whether to continue to book a cruise line that permits smoking on balconies or to move to one that bans it, personal choice how to interact with others around us. How much kindness or nastiness; how to approach the smoker next door to you who may be offensive. How much understanding of others. Some cannot help themselves in certain situations. Fouremco Posted September 22, 2014 #245 Share Posted September 22, 2014 During last week's Alaska cruise on the Oosterdam, there was a non-smoking day in the casino. I don't know if it was a one-off event or part of a study to see what the impact would be if HAL was to institute a permanent smoke-free casino policy, but I suspect the latter. sail7seas Posted September 22, 2014 #247 Share Posted September 22, 2014 We've had the no-smoking in casino nights on several cruises through the years. It doesn't mean much so far as I can see as it's been years they have done it from time to time. Even when they call a night no-smoking the casino stinks anyway. It carries that smoke smell always. cruiseing marly Posted September 23, 2014 #248 Share Posted September 23, 2014 On the Masdam now the ship is almost smoke free . Have seen only one smoker in the casino. No smokers on any balconies close to our cabin. The smoking area at the back pool area has only a few smoker's. If smokers are all migrating I wonder where they are! Califonria cruiser Posted September 26, 2014 #249 Share Posted September 26, 2014 Sorry for the smoking question, tried posting on the smoke thread, but it was closed. I am overly sensitive to smoke, always have and on all the cruises we have been on, never been an issue, but I have never sailed Holland America or the Baltic so figure it may be an issue and wondering what the options are. Are there any bars that are smoke free so I can get a drink? Are there any music venues that are smoke free so I can go to the shows? Figure if they are the only cruise line that is smoker friendly nowadays, guess they will get more of those passengers and wondering if there is a place for me, too or whether I need to rethink it. I love the itinerary so am trying to make it work. Did people find it overwhelming? Jenn

I love the itinerary so am trying to make it work. Did people find it overwhelming? Jenn We'll keep the answer real basic and factual since it's outside the main smoking thread. Here is HAL's posted policy: For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted. Stateroom verandahs Casino (Active players only) Seaview Bar Outside Decks Sports Deck Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only) Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas. Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.
