When to drop luggage in Sun Cabin

My husband and I will be only bringing carry-ons on our next cruise on the Sun. We can board beginning at 12. Does anyone know if we could drop our bags in our cabin before going to lunch, or would we be in the way? Last time we did this we took our bags to the MDR with us, but I would prefer to drop it if possible.

Depending on the turn around time for the ship to be cleaned and prepped for

the next voyage access to your cabin may or may not be restricted.

Generally NCL had large folding type doors off of the elevators to passageways

blocking the access (NCL SUN).

Now if you know where your cabin is located and you don't see any doors blocking

go ahead and attempt to get to your cabin - along the way you may see signs

of crews cleaning cabins and getting them ready and then they may have already

been thru your deck and the cabin door to your cabin may or may not be shut.

If you are questioned by a crew member simply state you are putting your bags

in your cabin and then are off to eat or whatever. Never met a sour puss that

offered any trouble to this.

If open go in and stash your bags in a closet or somewhere out of sight. Leave

the door open if you go about the ship say for a bite to eat or site see.

Take your valuables with you.

The cleaning crew may be back to do a final check on the cleaning and close

the door.

If the door is shut use your key card to open it and you can start to stash your

clothing where you want it to go cabinets drawers closets etc.

From here go have a that bite to eat bon voyage drink or take in a tour of the ship !

If entry to the passageway to your cabin is blocked then go to the (Lido) deck

buffet or MDR and wait for the cabin clearance.

As a general rule of thumb a ship that arrives at of near 7 am will not have the

cabins ready before 1 pm (suites and premium cabins early). Getting the inbound

passengers off the ship and cleaning the ship and prepping it for the next

voyage is an 'All Hands on deck" operation. Most likely the inbound passengers

are requested to be off the ship by 10 am and security has had an opportunity

to check for stragglers.

General boarding then could begin somewhere after noon 12 noon.

The schedule could be condensed and pushed up quite a bit if sailing is at 5 pm

Later sailing gives a great deal more breathing room for a relaxed efficient boarding.

That and the likely hood that the later you board the more likely your cabin will

be available for immediate occupancy.

Then after all the cleaning and prepping is done it is off to another enterprise

getting all the checked baggage on board and to its respective cabin.

In the interests of a smooth operation do what you can to help yourself - but

please stay out of the way cleaning and baggage crews - visiting your cabin

early to dump your goodies is not frowned upon unless the crew is in your

cabin cleaning it ! Go somewhere else and come back later !

I don't have an idea if they clean the ship top to bottom or other - but it stands

to reason that larger cabins and those with balconies need a tad bit more time

to clean than those that are Inside and Ocean View category. So if you are in an

Inside or Ocean View it is a good guess that your cabins will be available later.

Then of course is the 'Throw the Rule Book Away' and take up Dart throwing

but this is information I have gleaned from my cabin steward (NCL SUN) about

what goes on between cruises. - "NO Rest for the Wicked" !

AND you can help in leaving the ship - don't make a personal mess delaying the

next voyage !

I think people do it often, but just wheeling the carryon to the MDR really is not difficult. It really helps the staff who are so busy turning rooms around.

If your boarding gets delayed a bit, then not so much of a deal.

Thank you for all the comments and suggestions.

dont-use-real-name, I appreciate the time you took for the complete reply, and everyone else was really helpful, too. We are up on the 9th deck in a balcony, so I will see about poking my nose up there if the MDR loks crowded enough to have the bags be an issue. I guess it depends if they go top down, or from the bottom up. ;+)

Can you please advise me how this is possible? Because I typically pack as if I'm moving away forever!!! LOL. We are going on the Sun as well and flying across the country so I don't want to lug a whole bunch of suitcases, but WOW 2 carryons for a week.... impressive!!!

LOL Cruzlover80. I'm used to it. We did two weeks in Europe twice the same way. The worst thing is I am a jogger so I always have to bring more shoes than I hope for. We got these cool roller bags with zip on and off backpacks that are perfect.

At least on the NCL ships we don't have to dress formally for dinner. I bring a few basic bottoms and tops and mix and match for the week. We do laundry once during the second week.

Of course I am also a backpacker and when you are carrying everything for 40 plus miles you learn how to make do. :-)

The MDR(s) are on deck 5 midship and aft - considering that you are on deck

9 look to go to the Garden Buffet-Great Outdoors-Sports Bar-Moderno all these

on the Pool Deck 11 midship-aft and closer more convenient than the MDR.

Incidentally in going to deck 11 you will pass near your cabin on deck 9.

Because the NCL SUN is much smaller than the BA GA EP more in likely your

cabin should be ready when boarding.

Deck 11 forward is where a few suites and most all the mini-suites are - not

much there for the cleaning crew to fret about.

Deck 10 is for the most part all balcony and inside cabins.

Deck 9 (your deck) has a mix of suites for and aft with balcony and insides and

would be where the initial cleaning and resupplying the cabins would start.

The suites get attention first in that priority boarding is furnished to these

folks - so there is an excellent chance that Deck 9 cleaning will be all done

right after noon (1200 pm).

Deck 8 is in the same class as your Deck 9 - a mix of suites and balconies and

insides. Could be that is where they start also ?

The rest of the Decks are composed of Ocean view and insides and likely to

be cleaned and prepped last.

I was in a mini-suite NCL SUN SB ANC-YVR 7/2013 and boarded at about 2:30 pm

and there were no cabin crew cleaners or anyone else around for that fact.

Door was shut - used key card and begin sorting stuff where I wanted it to go.

Oh and use the stairways - with the bulk of the passengers waiting for the

elevators and then all the stops going up and down it is a rather futile effort

wasting time. The elevators in the center of the ship get prime usage during

the embarking - think about going forward or aft to another set less used if

stair walking is not in your exercise regimen - something to note before and

after shows/entertainment. After the mandatory muster drill use the stairs

(you had to use them to get to the muster station) and everyone expects to

use the elevators. Muster stations are on Deck 6 (Promenade) and for you

to return to your cabin is only 3 flights up ! Piece of pie - slice of cake !

Make the most of your voyage for a memorable trip -

You take the 'High Road' and I will take the 'Low' and I will be in the bar

awaiting for you ! LOL !

We have done NZ for 10 days with carry on and still had room for souvenirs and purchases. :) love the freedom of carryon, but as advised, you probably don't look as swish as the other pax who have packed hair straighteners 5x foundations, 3x night wear shoes and multiple tops with matching jewellery and accessories. ;) It is what you are comfortable with.

We are used to flying so luggage restraints are a reality!
