Djptcp Posted August 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2014 DH and I will be sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam in November and noticed that we have a late 11pm departure time in San Juan. Will the casino be open before the late sailing? When we have sailed on Carnival and it has had a late departure time from Nassau, the casino opens around 7 or 8pm. BTW, we will be on a VIP casino cruise this trip, so obviously casino time will be important!
sail7seas Posted August 20, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 20, 2014 (edited) No. The casino will remain closed while the ship is in port unless special permission has been received from local authorities. I have sailed on HAL ships to San Juan with late sailaways and the casino was closed. Given this is a casino charter, perhaps they will get permission? Since this is a Casino charter, I rather doubt that anyone on Cruise Critic, not connected with the chartering organization or HAL, can give you a definitive answer.. Suggest you ask the charterer. or the TA which is handling the charter...

BruceMuzz Posted August 20, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 20, 2014 (edited) For all practical and legal purposes, San Juan is a US Port. US Customs is very inflexible in allowing unlicensed casinos to open in US Ports. Since San Juan has a large number of casinos nearby the ship, they would also be very reluctant to have your ship cut into their profits. Don't count on it being open. Krazy Kruizers Posted August 20, 2014 #6 Share Posted August 20, 2014 I just checked my daily "On Location" programs from when we were on the Nieuw Amsterdam this past spring. The slots opened at 10 AM and closed shortly before we got to San Juan around 1 PM. Then they reopened at 11 PM.
Sage Posted August 20, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2014 San Juan has several casinos, and perhaps that is why the ship's casinos are closed.
meterman2 Posted August 20, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 20, 2014 Also, there are casino's in San Juan. When we docked at "Old San Juan", there was a casino across the street from the ship.
Typhoon1 Posted August 20, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 20, 2014 The Puerto Ricans would much rather have you spending your hard earned dollars in their casinos.
Djptcp Posted August 21, 2014 Author #10 Share Posted August 21, 2014 Thanks, Kraiy Kruizers for checking the On Location for me. This is not a charter cruise at all, meaning not everyone on it is affiliated with the VIP casino cruise. It has been our past experience with these cruises that only about 100 cruisers or less are actually with that promotion.
navybankerteacher Posted August 21, 2014 #11 Share Posted August 21, 2014 There is a casino in the Old San Juan Sheraton - literally across the street from where you will be moored, so you will not have to suffer withdrawal for too long.

Crew like to play there. They can run over when they have some time off. :)
