Welcome to Cruise Critic (we see this is your first post). You should take a look at the Ports of Call/Asia board and also repost your request on that Asian specific board. And yes, you can do things on your own in some Asian ports although ports like Saigon and Bangkok have issues because of the port being a long distance from the city.

Just grab a taxi is what I do

Hire them for the day will take you avert where you want 150 per day for a long day

We can certainly think of some Asian ports where a taxi is the last thing we would want. Some examples would be Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, etc. In most cities we prefer to use our feet (the best way to really "feel" a city is to walk), local transportation, and occasionally a taxi. And in Bangkok, if you use a taxi you will run the risk of spending a good part of your day stuck in traffic.

Tony welcome to cruise critic.

The short of this is that some ports you can do on your own and others to get the most out of it you would need some type of organized tour.

To cut down on cost go to the roll call section of your cruise and see if others are looking for others on the cruise to join them on private tours because often by sharing tours you can save money.

Someone said just grab a taxi and that is not always practical. Take the pier that serves most ships arriving to Bangkok and that is a 90 minute drive each way and a taxi is not cheap. Smaller ships can dock downtown but most can't.

Also as suggested visit the Asia Ports Of Cal Board to learn more about each area.
