nerds2go Posted September 2, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2014 I'm still trying to decide if we should do private tour (shared with small group) or Celebrity's shore excursion to Pompei and Sorrento. We would much more prefer the private tour, but I have read so much about the terrible traffic jams, that it makes me nervous that we could possibly miss the boat. moingerson Posted September 2, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2014 Small tour is the best. Pompeii is an amazing place. A huge ship group will take away the feel. .We got in on a private booking with from someone in our roll call. Only 10 of us! Was awesome! nerds2go Posted September 2, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted September 2, 2014 Moingerson, did you do Sorrento also? Was traffic a problem?
Rare cruisemom42 Posted September 2, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 2, 2014 You'll likely get many more replies if you repost this in the Italy Ports of Call section. (Pompeii and Sorrento are in Italy, not Greece.)
Chairsin Posted September 2, 2014 #5 Share Posted September 2, 2014 Take the train from Sorrento to Pompeii then you don't have to worry about traffic. Last time we were there we were able to hire a guide on the spot. Of you could just buy a good guide book and go totally DIY. moviefan2010 Posted October 5, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 5, 2014 The ship tour of Pompei was too short. I wish I had took the train and did it my self. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
Janet&Carl Posted October 9, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 9, 2014 (edited) Trains in Italy are so easy - the ticket machines have an option for language and you can choose to buy your tickets in English. Look out for the food and drink sellers on the way into Pompeii they will tell you that there is no food and drinks available inside - this is not true. They sell an overpirced and not tasty product. The cafe inside is much nicer. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes - walking all day on the paving rocks is tough.
