Sirkeline Posted September 15, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 15, 2014 There is a great deal on Costa Serena in October. Shoud we give it a try as a 7 day get-way, or will we be disappointed ? Any input ?
hallasm Posted September 15, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 15, 2014 Costa is known for being "very Italian" - I have not been at a Costa Ship but spoken with fellow cruisers with very mixed feed back. Check the review of the actual ship - for sure there is a reason why Costa is offering great deals.
Eboracum_d Posted September 15, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 15, 2014 There are a lot of announcements over the PA system -- all repeated in 5 or 6 languages!
Sumisid Posted September 15, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 15, 2014 There are a lot of announcements over the PA system -- all repeated in 5 or 6 languages! This is exactly one of the reasons I would never sail with them. On the Western Med Cruise with Liberty of the Seas I thought it already a bit annoying to have all the announcemnts in English AND Spanish, so only two ;). You also have to keep in mind that Italians are nice people, but very loud and sometimes a bit pushy. And they tend to travel in large family groups with lots of children. Any input ? It's a "great deal", it's a "7 day get-away", your description. Approach with an open mind and prepared to enjoy yourself(ves) why not? It'd at least be one of your life experiences, good or bad. Costa is on our list but, like you, as a great deal. One which, up to now, hasn't been at the right time. tenpin Posted September 16, 2014 #6 Share Posted September 16, 2014 Forget most of what you read about Costa they are a good Company and great value cruises. Most of the bad feedback is from people who have never sailed with them or state this Italian ship was full of Italians. Yes there will be many announcements but simple rule is 'If it ain't in English it does not concern you' We have been on many lines all are different in some way, just off on our next Costa cruise loved most of the 19 we have had with them. Give them a try if the price is right but the AI package and enjoy the experience
sweep Posted September 16, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 16, 2014 It is a long time since our one cruise on Costa. The main thing we didn't like was there was no proper start and finish. The Italians joined and left at each port. We like the whole atmosphere of the Captain's welcome party and then the final goodbye atmosphere, cheesy as it is. Each to their own. Anyone who has had kids are very adept at turning a deaf ear;)

Dancer Bob Posted September 21, 2014 #10 Share Posted September 21, 2014 I'm convinced there are two Costas- one, European vacation time with kids travel free promotions. Don't go on that one unless you really, really like a family atmosphere. The other is off season. I've done many, including Serena in Adriatic in early November, all great trips. Trips on any cruise line can vary wildly depending on the demographics. Treat with suspicion any review on any cruise line which doesn't give you an idea of who, when and where. There are also incompetent travel agents out there. I was told by one so-called cruise specialist that the Mediterranea has tile dance floors- having been on that ship six times since 2006, I could assure her with confidence that has never been the case. I have also been told by one couple that they had asked especially about evening buffets, and been given totally wrong information- instead of saying "I don't know" the agent made up an answer. CASPALL Posted September 30, 2014 #11 Share Posted September 30, 2014 We have had 2 cruises with Costa within a year We went on Mediterranea 2 weeks go for a 5 nighter ound the Med and had a great cruise. It was quit busy - and there were a lot of smaller children but they were all fine - nobody annoyed us or got on our nerves. The food was really good and as long as you embrace the Italian experience then there won't be a problem. I love that we can't understand what nearby speakers are chatting about - youre in your own little world. We had a balcony cabin midships and it was all good The only problem - the cruise was too short. We only had time for 5 nights. LAst octoberwe did 20 nights Savona to Argentina and that was our first Costa experience. The ship was quite packed and everyone danced and danced at night - as they did on Mediterranea. We are more used to the P&O passengers who go to bed at 10.30 so we enjoyed the party atmosphere As for the announcements in different languages - just chill out and tune in when its in your language. No bother! Book a premium cabin as you will get exta Costa points and extra deals Costa is a good company to cruise with - not the laughing stock that some people make them out to be. The value for money is exceptional. Caryl
