Laundry

Where would they be located. . . .

If they are on stateroom decks they would be inevitably located in areas that are now devoted to staterooms so, yeah, I think they would necessarily create traffic and noise in certain areas.

Personally, I have never had any trouble packing enough to get through a cruise. Since RCI's business is dominated by the one week cruise, I suspect most people are in that position. I think that, if asked, I would vote to keep them out [i have visions of the laundry room in the basement of my college dorm] but it is not a big deal to me either way. It just cracks me up to see folks getting wound up about it. RCI has made a business decision to not have them -- devoting the space they would occupy to uses [probably passenger staterooms] that are more profitable and avoiding the cost of equipment and maintenance. I think it is a safe bet that, if the RCI bosses thought it would improve the bottom line, they would install a whole deck of them in about half a heartbeat.

Hi,

I'm looking at an RCL cruise for next summer. Could someone please tell me about the RCL wash and fold bag. Is this a laundry bag that can be packed to the brim and then the clothes are washed, dried, and folded for a per bag charge? What is the average charge? Can the bag can be sent out on any day of the cruise for the flat fee? Does RCL have a one time charge for the same service for all the bags you want to send out during the cruise?

I'm sorry to ask so many questions but I couldn't find the info on the RCL website.

Thanks,

Cindy

Have had just the opposite experience. White have always come back white and when instructed to wash items in cold water and dry at low heat, they have come back perfect.
Patty I will attest that my whites washed on Vision were gray. However I gave no special instructions, and on washing at home with "oxiclean" they were back to normal.

My clothes still shrink on a cruise, even without using the laundry.;)
Mine, too - always figured it was the salt air that made them shrink.

Many years ago, on one of my early RCI cruises, we were on an RCI-provided bus to transfer from the airport to the ship. Their was an RCI rep at the front of the bus giving information about the cruise during the ride. At one point, she made that little joke. "Don't worry, you don't really gain weight on our cruises, but the salt atmosphere might shrink your clothes." (This was in the days of lavish midnight buffets along with all the other meals/snacks available on board.)

A wise guy in the back of the bus raised his hand & asked, "how does that salt air shrink even the clothes I left home?" :D

Wash & Fold is $30.00 only on Wash & fold day. You can only send out Underwear, socks T-shirts and swimsuits, etc. There are from 1 to 3 wash & fold days depending on the length of the cruise. RCI also has a regular daily laundry service that has a per item charge. Edited by FLACRUISER99

Where would they be located, would it cause extra traffic, noise near staterooms, etc. Just something I am happy about not seeing on RCL. And again would never need or want to do laundry on vacation period.

I couldn't tell you where RCI would locate them, Disney Fantasy had them on every deck, and they were unnoticeable if you weren't looking for them.

While I'm sure that most people would never want to do laundry, needing to do laundry is something that sometimes is unavoidable. RCI has made the choice for you, instead of an option to have it done or do it yourself, you can only have it done for the big fee. The other lines have laundry services also and you don't have to use the machines, it's just nice that they offer a low cost alternative.

If your asking for an opinion about where RCI could put them, I'd stick em in the Casino, make em take dollar coins and call it a game.

Washer & dryers free.....no

But 6 bags of laundry, per week (3 per person) washed and folded by the cruise line...yes! Free!

not a minute of my cruise time wasted in guest laundry and clean clothes:D

I was being facetious.:D

If you got all that laundry wahed and folded for free, it must be a perk you receive on one of the lines. It's not something the average cruiser gets.

We are going on 12 days but the $30 special does not wash tops and pants. And I know we will need laundry done since it will be 13 nights with pre hotel stay. Do they have specials like Holland America for laundry all week for like 40 on longer than 7 day cruises? I love RCI just need to get the laundry down since princess, carnival and Hal had laundromats

This is what you can included in the Wash & Fold Special which is $30 per bag and it's all you can fit in it: Pajamas, socks, shorts, swimwear, t-shirts and underwear. It's a plastic bag that does have some stretch to it so if you roll clothes tightly, you'd be amazed at how much you can put in the bag.

And here is the link to the laundry prices http://boards.cruisecritic.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=284178&d=1377565421

Yes, you're right:D

Luckily, our 3 next upcoming cruises on Royal Caribbean, sails from a home port (and one other close home port) so I can pack my whole closet and not worry if I've packed enough :p;):D

As all our cruises have been over 12n plus pre & post cruise stays I have always planned what clothes to pack and factor in laundry days so as to reduce baggage. Being Australian we have several long haul flights, and with some airlines you can only carry 20kgs each.

In Australia, because of the weather everyone washes and dries their clothes on clotheslines out in the sunshine. No one uses driers unless it is an emergency. This way it saves the integrity of your clothes and you save on power. We have always carried a small amount of liquid laundry detergent, an expandable clothes line and pegs on our trips. Consequently we handwash and hang out on the line on the balcony. It's a great activity my husband and I share together and we have done it for years.

Laundry is not a big deal and I couldn't imagine my expensive French lingerie going to the laundry and being washed with every ones clothes...yuck!!!!

We do not have that option as we have limited baggage we can take on the flights so we hand wash a lot.

Ha, ha, GOTCHA':D

Most of our cruises have been out of home ports so I too, pack whatever I want AND, I have a sherpa to carry it. I was on a B2B, won a free bag of laundry and never used it because I had packed enough.

YOU may not need laundry rooms, but some of us who have clothes that get dirty would love to have them, especially if our vacation is extended with pre and post cruise hotel stays. Some of us might want to pay less than $5 to wash and dry a load of clothes ourselves rather than pay $40-$50 or so to have it done by the full laundry service. And yes, some folks do find the full service laundry costs to be reasonable, and some of us do not.

And yes, we know all about the fact that some of you don't want to do laundry on vacation, but some of us have to save money somewhere to enable us to take the vacation. Personally I would rather take the money saved by doing laundry myself to treat my wife and I to dinner at a specialty restaurant.

And yes, my time is valuable too, but I put in a load of laundry early in the morning ( I am an early riser), head off to get some coffee and return to find it almost finished.

Okay, now flame away!;)

Not flaming, but when I was single, both in college and out of college, my laundry was done once a week. I have been trained from youth, that laundry is done once a week. When I lived in an apartment, married with 2 kids, for a short period of time, I did the laundry once a week at the laundry. We have laundry in our house, so it's different now. I have been on vacations every year for at least 8-9 days, and some years up to 12 days straight. Never once felt the need to do laundry. Just dump my suitcase out at the end of the week, and do it when I get back. If extending my stay, and really needed to, hotels have laundry. I have walked passed them many of times. Very seldom do I ever see them used. I think most people, will not touch them on vacation. Sure, some people will, but honestly, a laundry room will take up the same space as a cabin. They would need alot of people to use it, to make up the money lost.

So not to flame, but Most people probably have never even noticed that the ship has no laundry service. :D

Not trying to start anything as well but the laundrymats on the other cruise lines were always busy, so people do laundry on vacation. I would personally rather do laundry in a machine than handwash in the tiny little basin on Oasis and hang to dry - that's alot of work. It didn't make noise either and people would go to press their formal wear. It is all about choices I think. It would be nice to have as one would never know they were there unless you needed them.;)

Yep, there are undoubtedly times where it would be nice, but the bottom line definitely is - use the space for a cabin (revenue) or for self-service laundry (little revenue, and more maintenance expense.) RCI has made that choice, and I'd be shocked if they ever changed their minds on this.

You've pretty much summed it up and I agree with you that a change in the situation is highly unlikely. If having a self-serve laundry is a deal-breaker. RCI. NCL, and Celebrity (and perhaps others) is not for you.

There are many reasons to choose or not choose a cruise line.

Maybe those who aren't happy about not having laundry rooms on RCCL should cruise on some other cruise line that does.

LuLu

I do cruise on other lines - Cunard, Princess, P&O and recently long (10 day+) cruises on RCI. The other lines all have laundries which are very useful. The first few times on Cunard I had no intention of going anywhere near a laundry as we were cruising from a home port, but a dinner companion from the USA insisted I had a look, and I was very impressed. Next cruise which was long haul with several sea days I really cut down on luggage and used the laundry. I'm sure RCI could find the space to squeeze a few laundry rooms in as they are very compact. I'm sure the wash & fold service is variable by ship, but on my last cruise it came back discoloured, smelling strange and squashed into the bag, looking worse than when it went in!
