Cancellation deadline -Typhoon hitting Japan

So how far in advance does Princess decide to cancel a cruise? Thyphoon Phanfone is going to hit southern Japan on Monday and they send an emergency notice with no cancellation decisions? Are they kidding? We are supposed to fly out there tomorrow. What about all those people booked to fly there this weekend to sail out Monday?

Anyone has any experience on cancellations?

We just received notice that they're delaying departure for one day. But that's not going to help us because we would have to fly into the storm on Monday to get there on time for sail out on Tuesday.

We have made other plans and canceled our flight and hotels. Very disappointed that we cannot go to Japan. :(

Wow, sorry to hear you had to cancel. I think we would have done the same. I'm sure it would be dangerous to fly into Japan with a typoon in force  Did Princess offer passengers who decided to cancel refunds? I hope they offered passengers some sort of compensation. Good luck with your new plans.

Typhoons and hurricanes are fickle and can change direction within hours. Princess generally doesn't announce changes until there's a certainty that they won't have to change plans back.

If you have Princess air, they will change your flights for you. Same if you have booked Princess pre-cruise hotel. With independent arrangements, Princess has no obligation to refund or assist you. They may but it's your choice to book independently. They don't generally offer refunds or compensation unless it's a Princess issue, such as the current Sea Princess issues. They're not responsible for acts of God.

If you cancel the cruise, your insurance will refund your fare less the cost of insurance.

Why do you feel Princess should compensate passengers because of weather issues?? That is why we take out insurance.

OP, sorry you had to cancel.

I don't understand why they don't cancel. That thing is a monster of a storm. I wouldn't want to visit an area that was just hit with all that rain. Besides the fact that there is another one right behind this one - Vongfon.

We did get the insurance, so I will try to get compensated by them if Princess does not cancel by Monday.

Just curious, and not sure how often this happens, but what if the weather is so bad, Princess cancels the entire cruise, due to the route being in an area effect by a storm the entire trip?

They rarely do. What can happen is that the ship stays at sea until conditions improve even if it means putting passengers up in a hotel until they can board. Ports are missed all the time due to weather and during hurricane season, it's not unusual to have major itinerary changes and schedule disruptions. Princess will do whatever is necessary for the safety of the ship and passengers. Anyone booking a cruise during hurricane or typhoon season is aware of the potential issues and takes that risk. That's why fares are usually so good at those times. Don't leave home without insurance. Edited by Pam in CA
