SantanaTto Posted August 18, 2005 #1 Share Posted August 18, 2005 We are going to Bermuda on 10/2 and were thinking about taking our 16 year old son with us. Problem is that he does not have a passport. Last year, we went to Bermuda with him and he only needed a photo ID to travel. Does anyone know if his ID would be enough this time? I am not sure what the exact requirements are. Thanks!
K&RCurt Posted August 18, 2005 #2 Share Posted August 18, 2005 Until Jan '06 A photo ID and Birth Cretificate (with raised seal) are all that is required. After that a passport will be necessary.

SantanaTto Posted August 18, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted August 18, 2005 Thank you both!! I do remember now that he had to have his birth certificate last year too! Solves one problem!
imsulin Posted August 18, 2005 #5 Share Posted August 18, 2005 If he's 16, he will also need a government issued photo ID.

nybumpkin Posted August 19, 2005 #8 Share Posted August 19, 2005 Aside from travel out of the country, you can use the passport as photo ID on domestic flights. Our 14 YO is going to Atlanta with a church group this fall - first time he's flown without one of us - so he'll be taking the passport as his ID. Caltexan Posted September 15, 2005 #9 Share Posted September 15, 2005 If a minor child is traveling w/o their parents is a passport required or is the same documentation ie birth certificate and government issued ID okay.
kitty9 Posted September 15, 2005 #10 Share Posted September 15, 2005 A minor child can travel with a birth certificate and a photo ID when traveling without their parents if that travel begins before the new passport requirements begin next year. But, both parents must give the adults the minor is traveling with a notorized letter giving the adults permission to take the child out of the country and giving them permission to make emergency medical decisions. If the minor child doesn't have that letter, they will be refused boarding.
Caltexan Posted September 15, 2005 #11 Share Posted September 15, 2005 Thank you Kitty, I will relay this info on to a friend who has a D going on a cruise next month. Is a school ID and birth certificate okay or will she need a state issued ID?
serene56 Posted September 15, 2005 #12 Share Posted September 15, 2005 If the child is over 16 a state issue id is the best- especially with all he crack downs.
land lover Posted September 15, 2005 #13 Share Posted September 15, 2005 Don"t rush out an get a passport for a sixteen year old unless you have to, they only last 5 years and the cost difference is minimal wait to get them a ten year adult when they are 18. Caltexan Posted September 16, 2005 #15 Share Posted September 16, 2005 Serene, You stated that if the child is over 16 they will need a state ID, my friends daughter is 15 so she does not have a DL so I guess she should get a state ID.

lvssushi Posted September 17, 2005 #19 Share Posted September 17, 2005 Just want to make sure.....I read at the State department website that the new passport requirement now does not go into effect until December 31, 2006. Here's the link: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2225.html I haven't pursued getting passports for our March 2006 cruise because of this. Should I get the passports anyway? serene56 Posted September 17, 2005 #20 Share Posted September 17, 2005 Since the deadline for the passports are pushed back I can now get a passport every few months for all people in our cruising party. Instead of one huge passport bill I can now do it every other month.
petunialesley Posted September 26, 2005 #21 Share Posted September 26, 2005 My mother took my 9 year old son (who has a different last name than hers) to London and Paris this summer. I took great pains in preparing a notarized letter signed by my husband and myself, giving consent for the trip as well as for medical decisions. My mother said no one ever asked for it. Same thing happened when I took my niece to Mexico. I guess you need it just in case.
