Mira28 Posted October 24, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2014 I've never cruised NCL. Can anyone tell me about the Gem cruises to Bahamas from NYC? I'm single, 60 and cruising alone. I like kids and being around younger people. Is there nightlife? I would likely have an interior room. How does the Gem compare to the Carnival Splendor? Thank you! khaide612 Posted October 24, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 24, 2014 Every cruise is different. I did the Jewel 2 years in a row out of NYC - same week, same itinerary. First year, all the night entertainment was packed with people dancing and having fun. Second year, at night it was a ghost ship - the night time venues were empty - even the White Hot Party was a dud.
gcdogwalker Posted October 24, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 24, 2014 We were on the Gem to the Caribbean last Oct. It was a great ship and fun to go out of NYC. We loved the shows and the casino, although I'm not much of a gambler. I think you'll be just fine, they have other singles on board and even have meetings so you can get to meet them but you aren't pushed to do so. The food was great and it's a beautiful ship. There weren't many kid on board due to the fact that it was when school was in session. Go for it!
Mira28 Posted October 24, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted October 24, 2014 Thanks! It's good to get different perspectives. I'd rather the ship be lively of course, but as long as there are people out and about with some music and/or comedians, I'm happy. Nothing beats sailing out of NYC, for sure. I did love the Splendor cruise last winter, but they've moved that ship to another port. So the Gem seems closest in many respects.
khaide612 Posted October 24, 2014 #5 Share Posted October 24, 2014 By the way, I did the Gem in May and had an awesome time. The ship is great and like every NCL ship I have been on there was music in every venue at night.

Notion_of_the_Ocean Posted October 24, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 24, 2014 There is a tennis court on the Gem. If you enjoy tennis, then you will love this. Tennis out on the ocean is pretty wild.
soaringfalcon Posted October 25, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 25, 2014 I can't compare to Carnival since I've never sailed it but we loved our Gem cruise this August. There was plenty of night life! We've always liked the shows and comedians. I think you would really enjoy it.

Thank you! when I went on the Gem last month to Canada, the avg age was like 62. there were so little kids on board that the head of the kids entertainment dept took the week off for vacation and sailed with us as a passenger. there were like 10 kids and a staff of 5 for that dept. (I'm fine w/no kids.) interior room is fine but SMALL. it's a queen size bed plus a foot of space on either side. it has a 2' x 2' table and 1 small chair. an obstructed oceanview with picture window has the same sized bed plus a 2seat couch. it seemed like 50% more space. it's only like $10/day more. i went solo and the inside room was fine. Rare mizLORInj Posted October 26, 2014 #12 Share Posted October 26, 2014 when I went on the Gem last month to Canada, the avg age was like 62. . . That seems to be the demograpic of most longer (7 night) Canada/NE cruises. For other destinations, the average is younger. ------------ I love the Gem. I did enjoy Splendor last month too. jeffregpuck Posted October 26, 2014 #13 Share Posted October 26, 2014 My Mom (64) and I (43) just sailed the Gem earlier this month on the New England itinerary and there was pretty good nightlife. Each night had a different themed party that kind of catered to the different tastes and crowds on board. (Latin dance party, 50's/60's night, 70's/80's night, Country night, White Hot party). We both had a great time!

Adele1 Posted December 8, 2014 #15 Share Posted December 8, 2014 Have not sailed Carnival but have done 3 (coming up on 4) Gem cruises out of NYC - to Canada & New England, Bahamas & the Carib. The Gem's staff is very accommodating and there are plenty of activities both day & nite to keep one occupied if you so desire. The specialty restos are great with Le Bistro being my favorite. Do sail her - you will be pleased.
trish1c Posted December 8, 2014 #16 Share Posted December 8, 2014 We love the Gem & the convenience of sailing from NYC. The Bahamas route in winter doesn't get you that much fun in the sun because it takes a day to get to the warm & the Bahamas aren't that warm. There is plenty of night life on the Gem & a variety of ages.
carribbeanmic Posted December 8, 2014 #17 Share Posted December 8, 2014 I have been on both Gem and Splendor. Had an equally good time on both. I did not enjoy the 2nd city comedy very much but all other entertainment on the Gem was great. The cabins are much smaller on the Gem.
