MsB1254 Posted December 2, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 2, 2014 I know this is very subjective and varies to the quality of service. However, we have booked a lot of private excursions and I would like to know what percentage is the norm that you would tip in Europe for a job well done for the private tours. Thanks for any suggestions.
SwissDave Posted December 2, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) There is no requirement to tip in France. However, if you feel that the tour guide did a very good job then feel free to give something extra. It won't be turned down. So, if you wanted to, and felt it deserved, about 10% would be more than enough, so if for example your tour cost €90 and you wanted to add something, then rounding up to the €100 would be fine. Most people in Europe would not give extra unless the tour and the guide were exceptional. There is a tradition though, that the bus/coach driver has a small basket near him for you to throw in a couple of euros to say thanks. It is certainly not required or expected to give him/her any more than that. Edited December 2, 2014 by SwissDave

LondonTowner Posted December 2, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 2, 2014 Totally agree with SwissDave. Excessive tipping is not normal in Europe.

Hambagahle Posted January 19, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 19, 2015 10-15% is over the top in France where service is included in ALL prices. if you leave a Euro or two at a restaurant when you have been pleased with the service that is OK. But please - NOT 10-15% - first this marks you as a tourist and second it is NOT local practice.

Even Rick Steves says: https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/money/tipping-in-europe We had tips handed back in Italy where tips are considered offensive in a lot of places. Our Italian hosts says it puts people in a master servant situation. A lot of Americans have actually changed the culture in Italy and France by spreading their tipping culture. This is very, very sad. Please consider before you tip in Europe.
Jenna1983 Posted January 22, 2015 #8 Share Posted January 22, 2015 If something cost me 88-89€ I would just leave 90€ and walk away.
