Cabin Smoke Detector

I believe e-cig's are not allowed to be smoked in your state room. You need to check the Princess website.

From Princess website: Electronic Cigarettes

The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within the confines of the guest's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

Do e-cigs set off the cabin smoke detector? Vapor vs. smoke.

They do not set off smoke detectors if used in the conventional way. Do not know what would happen if you BLEW the vapor at a detector! Try at home not on the ship!

Since they have no lingering odor or deposits, "leave no trace" as it were -- it would be pretty much impossible to ban eCigs in staterooms, which the lines have apparently figured out.

There no smoke with e-cigs, just water vapor, so they will not set off a smoke detector. Also there is no lingering odor to smell up the carpeting, drapes, and furniture.

So the answer is, yes, you can use yours in your cabin with being concerned about the smoke detector.

I have been using mine in my cabins for several years.

JMO, but I think it is unfortunate that Princess changed the rules re" e-cigs, and now requires that except for use in ones cabin, their use be limited to IN the approved smoking areas, since the purpose for which many e-cig users utilize e-cigs is to NOT smoke "real" cigarettes and to avoid the delterious effects of the chemicals in cigarette smoke. So now we have to sit in the smoking area to use our e-cigs (which produce no smoke), and breathe in other people's cigarette and stinky cigar smoke!!

As I said .... JMHO

My husband is not impressed either having to sit in the stinky cigs area. I love the fragrance of his butterscotch vape.

The full Princess policy as of 12/12/14:

Keeping the comfort of our guests a priority, and in consideration of consumer studies which show smokers are a small minority of guests, Princess has implemented the following smoking policy:

Designated Smoking Areas

Clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available onboard and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, as well as a portion of the open decks. As a safety precaution, guests are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as this may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires.

Stateroom Smoking Policy Update

For all voyages departing after January 15th, 2012, Princess Cruises will prohibit smoking in guest staterooms and balconies. This policy change reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our guests who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the guest’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our guests, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our guests escape completely.

Electronic Cigarettes

The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within the confines of the guest's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

A secondary note: I read that the reasoning behind restricting e-cigs to areas either not visible to anyone else (your stateroom) OR those that are smoking-allowed -- is that e-cigs look too much like regular cigarettes and people might think that the no-smoking rules weren't being enforced. So if you were to need a hit of nicotine to maintain a calm perspective and enjoy your balcony, using a black-colored e-cig and hiding the blue glow thereof in a napkin/towel/blanket/your shirt sleeve would go undetected.

Just saying. (-- a non-smoker)

Granted the earlier versions (e-cigs) do look like a cocktail cigarette, but a PV (personal vaporiser) which my husband had uses, looks nothing like one.

Yes, an ecig can set off the stateroom fire detector. Dh was sitting on bed vaping directly under the smoke detector and we got a call from the bridge indicating the smoke alarm was going off. We explained it was an ecig and no problem. Just don't sit directly under it and you will be fine. The vapor dissipates fast so unless directly under, it won't go off.
