The do's and don'ts of open seating/ anytime dining?

We had Open Seating on the Westerdam earlier this month. As soon as we embarked, my husband reserved a table for two for the first three evenings. When we arrived at the dining room we told the maître 'd that we would prefer a more private location and, if possible, we'd love for it to be near a window. The maître 'd told us that he had tables for two near a window but they were not particularly private. We opted for the more secluded two-tops elsewhere and had a wonderful experience all week.

We like fixed seating, late, table for 8. This way with a late shore excursion we're not in a rush. It's always nice in the evenings talking about how our day went we normally make a night of it sometimes the last ones to leave just in time to catch the 10:00 show. Different strokes for different folks.

What we do is, after depositing our carry-ons in our cabin, head to the main dining room & check out 2-top tables in the area we'd like to be seated.

All of the MDR layouts (both upper/Fixed and lower/Open levels) are available on halfacts.com, so you can scope out your desired tables before leaving home. For example, here is the Noordam:

Choose your class of ship, and the link to the MDR map is the first "Info" after each ship name.

On our last cruise we reserved the same table for two for the first two nights. After that we got a card every day saying that the table was "assigned but not guaranteed" - even when we told them the night before that we would be dining elsewhere!
