Immigration question

Just wondering how immigration is handled on a cruise that has two US disembarkation ports? The Veendam is doing a Panama Canal in April from San Diego to either Ft Lauderdale or Boston. Since Ft Lauderdale is the first US port and a disembarkation port for some, I would assume some kind of immigration would take place for those going on to the next and final port which is Boston. Typically, they have to zero out all the passengers at the end of a cruise but Ft Lauderdale is technically not the end. Also,if immigration is done in Ft Lauderdale would you have to go through it again in Boston?

You will have Immigration for all in FLL as that will be the first U.S. port after being out of the country. If you are in transit, you will not do full Customs Inspection until you reach your final port and bring all your things off the ship. If there are no port calls between FLL and Boston, you may or may not have another Immigration check. It will be up to the officials in Boston to make that choice.

From your Signature, it looks like you will have a port call in Bermuda? If that is the case, you will have Immigration check in Boston.

You are right -- you will have to go through immigration in Ft Lauderdale.

As to Boston -- there is no telling what the officials will require you to do.

On a couple of our cruises we went through immigration in Key West. Then the next day we had to go through immigration again in Ft Lauderdale even though many of us were staying on for another cruise.

Are you staying in Boston before you begin your Bermuda cruise?

We are actually doing the b2b Panama Canal and Bermuda cruise so I know we will have to do immigration at the end of the Bermuda leg. Thanks for the information. We are looking at doing tours/sightseeing on our own in Ft Lauderdale and Boston and were trying to get an idea on how to schedule things.

We have been getting mixed reports about requirement to do life boat drill for all cruise segments. This last week, we read on some ships, repeat attendance was not required but it was on others. Obviously, if Veendam requires your attendance, you must be back aboard from your day ashore in time for drill.

There is so much to see and do in Boston, some pre-planning is a good idea.

Unfortunately, the USS Constitution has recently been closed to visitors as she undergoes repairs and maintenance. It's such a treat to see her particularly when under sail.

You may like to walk at least some of the Freedom Trail, Fanueil Hall, Paul Revere House, Old North Church, Bunker Hill Monument, John F. Kennedy Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Aquarium, North End of Boston, soooo much history and so much to do. Great food, shopping, sight seeing, sports, culture, education, medicine, great hotels.........

Pick your priorities for a one day visit. :)

We are really looking forward to our time in Boston. Thanks for the ideas. Hopefully we will make it this time! In 2006 Royal Caribbean messed up a hotel reservation after a Transatlantic and in 2012 Superstorm Sandy changed our Princess Canada New England itinerary so hopefully the third time will be a charm!
