That's awesome! I just paid $100 extra per person to get an aft balcony, so you got lucky!

We've sailed on an inside and an oceanview but got a great deal on a balcony this time coming up in March on the Breakaway. A couple of questions:

Is it worth it? We've had a negative Nelly friend tell us it's SO windy and blah blah...

What do you like about a balcony?

Thanks!!

I've never found it to be windy on the balcony on Breakaway. The standard ones are small, so balcony "connoisseurs" find them disappointing -- but if you've never had one, you won't be comparing them!

What I love about a balcony:

  • Being able to breathe the sea air
  • Having my own private ocean
  • Waking up in the wee hours and stepping outside to look at the stars
  • Coffee, or even breakfast, in my own private outdoor space
  • You don't have to get dressed and go out in public to go outside and enjoy the fact that IT'S NOT SNOWING

OMG! You will be super spoiled! I had an aft balcony on Sky last month and really loved it. In addition to everything else, aft baclonies are big enough for full-length lounge chairs, so you don't have to be "public" to lie out in the sun for a while.

After you board, definitely take a look around and figure out who can see down into your balcony and from what angles. That will let you know how "dressed" you want to be in which areas!

We are travelling on a casino offer and an inside cabin is included in the offer. I've upgraded to a balcony because of the space and bed configuration.

I'm travelling with my mother aka. Grandmom and my 13yo nephew. For a week long cruise. I thought the inside cabin would be way too tight when the three of us are in the cabin (nephew's bed would have been a pull down) and no chair/couch area.

Since we're travelling with a teenage boy we have the option of sending him out to the balcony and pulling the curtain while we get dressed if needed.

Thankfully the 3rd person free promotion applies so the sting of the upgrade is reduced.

All other things being equal, of course one would enjoy a balcony. The issue is whether the benefits of getting a balcony cabin outweighs the costs. There are opportunity costs here - with the additional cash, you can do other things.

We do like balconies but I think I would be happy with insides. A lot depends on the itinerary.

Some itineraries, like fjords, balconies are really great.

Example

Norwegian Fjords

Milford Sound, New Zealand.

Yet on others, we hardly used the balcony. One example would be cruising in humid tropical weathers. (e.g. out of Singapore!). It was so hot outside, we hardly stepped out. But if you love the heat and sun, then the balcony is good!

We've done inside, ocean view, balcony, and now a suite with no balcony. The type of room hasn't really dictated our overall cruise experience. We've loved them all. That being said, we did a circle cruise to Hawaii and splurged for the balcony. It was fantastic having breakfast out on the balcony in the middle of the Pacific with nothing but ocean and skies as far as the eye can see.

There might have also been some nude sunbathing ;)

I feel blessed just to be able to cruise, yes, a balcony is preferred, but I'd rather go more often and if that means inside or OV, I'm perfectly happy. I especially like aft/stern balconies, the wake view and all that, but in warm climates it can get stifling hot to the point of being unusable, especially while in port.
