Oh come on! If it was "free" you would still pay for it in the price. Does anyone really think they get the DP free if they book early? No! When the offer ends the price goes down :rolleyes:

Yes you would, perhaps. This was a way of reducing the headline cost in the old days, however, as a consensus seems to be developing that Thomson are no longer as inexpensive as they were such 'wizard schemes' begin to be obvious.

 

I have a Majesty cruise booked for october, maybe the last Thomson one as I booked it for the itinery, not the ship.

Well, based on my last 3 Thomson cruises, I managed 'free' AI and in fairness, when I priced the cruise later, it was more expensive. But I think the secret is to book well in advance. We are on Celebrity later this year, using their 1,2,3 go promotion. We have the drinks package and gratuities and if I was to book exactly the same cruise now, as opposed to 6 months ago, it would be £1800 pounds more! Regarding Thomson though, in common with most of the other lines, if they can get away with charging for an extra, and we, the punters are willing to pay, they will do it. I still think charging for a safe is a step too far, but I expect Celebrity will do the same and guess what, I will pay, just so I am covered by my travel insurance!

Thank you to all who answered my question.I expected to have to pay for a safe,as I have in hotels around the world.As this is our first cruise I just wanted to check that there were actually safes in the cabins.

It is not the norm and makes them like a cheap 3 star hotel in Spain.

 

The more I hear the more I wish I had not booked we will be stuck on for 18 days if it is crap.

 

Still on the verge of just ditching and losing the deposit.

 

A lot of people are loyal to Thompson but some appear not to have tried anything else.

This is our first cruise,so we are doing a week in the Caribbean and a week in Barbados 4 star (Ocean 2 ) but will still have to pay for a safe there.The main reason we chose Thomson was that we wanted a small ship.We have a balcony cabin are flying premium economy and have spent a LOT of money on this holiday so I don't think we'll quibble about the cost of a safe.

You will have to forgive us salty old sea dogs on these pages. It's just that most other cruise companies such as NCL include the cost of things like the safe & picking a certain cabin when booking online, and don't force you to cough up some more whilst separately queuing up at reception to get a safe key, or phoning a premium rate number for a specific cabin etc. All obviously fair enough to reduce the headline price for a cruise, but when that headline price starts levelling off with the prices of the other companies, I have noticed the Thomson folk start to get a touch techy :D

However all the cruise lines will try to extract some more cash from you for various items & services while aboard... the only universal constant I have found is that even on an all inclusive ship with as much free alcohol as you wish, they will always charge for a bottle of water.:eek:

Ok, head above parapet time.... About to be controversial & shot down in flames while taking fire from all sides.

 

I think Thomson ships are " like a like a cheap 3 star hotel in Spain." ... A well run one of course. That's why I like them, and for me is what makes for such a relaxing holiday.

Not that I have actually been in a cheap Spanish hotel but I imagine it to be something like a Thomson ship without the sprouts. :D

Have not yet been on the entire Thomson fleet, but if they could combine the food from the Island Escape with the cabins of the Dream with the casino of the old Destiny it would end up looking like the old Ocean Village and for me no other cruise line would get a look in.

You hit the nail on the head you have paid a lot already so should not be paying on top of that.

Good hotels dont charge for safes as well. It is what you expect as standard.

There are lots of other smaller ships and I agree having cruised 10 times with lots of different lines I would prefer a smaller ship.

We still have to sample the delights of Thompson. Not going till December but from all I am reading on balance they seem like the cheaper end without the cheaper prices.

Never had a free safe in a hotel. The only times we had one was on OV and our first (and maybe second) Thomson cruise before they started charging!

 

Last year we did a cruise and stay in a Thomson 4T hotel and it cost more than on the ship.

Just checked my receipt from my New Years Celebration cruise. It was two lots of £25, so £25 per week. We asked when returning the key has read before we went it was £15 for one week and £25 for two but told this was not the case.

Something similar happened to us on Dream, 23rd Feb 2014. We were charged £30 for 2 weeks whereas it had been £25. When I queried it I was told it had just gone up. However, 6 months later it was back to £25. :(

To be honest, I would rather the cost of the safe was included in the holiday. I wouldn't notice the £25 on the total cost of a fortnight. In many ways I feel Thomson has a duty of care to provide a safe as there could be many people that have to enter your room in the course of a holiday. How much does the actual safe cost for Thomson. The digital types. How long would you expect them to last. Its like the free bottle of sparkling wine we have had on other lines. I know the cost is covered somewhere by me, but it just feels a like a nice touch.
