thistledoo Posted February 6, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 6, 2015 Do many of you who have made a booking a long way out cancel and rebook if the ship is not full before full payment is required - in the hope the price drops? Have you ever been able to get your original cabin back at a reduced price? I am aware the original OBCs would be lost. We have made a booking for 2016 and the similar cruise this year has now dropped significantly for the March sailing. Is it normal practice for cruiselines to offer sale prices before doing the round of upsells and upgrades? Cheers
Rare LHT28 Posted February 6, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) Some TA's will get you the price adjustment without resorting cancelling & rebooking I would also check if you will lose your deposit as some do when booking in Australia if you do cancel rules are different in OZ than in N.A. paul929207 Posted February 6, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 6, 2015 Getting the same cabin is just pot luck. The quicker you re-book the better your chances. Assuming your original booking is for a "good" cabin, it will likely be snapped up quickly
cruisead Posted February 6, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 6, 2015 You also have to check the rules for this in your country. The rules for US citizens aren't necessarily the same for non-US citizens. You also need to find out if there's a cancelation penalty. If the new prices are after final payment, you won't be eligible for the lower fare---if you cancel and rebook, you run the risk of losing your cabin, as it goes back to general inventory and hundreds, if not thousands, of people will be able to get your cabin. thistledoo Posted February 7, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted February 7, 2015 I've now started a little book to write down prices of cruises we want to go on in the future. As we're new to this I figure it will get me used to what is good value and what isn't.

Rare KKB Posted February 7, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 7, 2015 Last year I upgraded from CC to AQ for $20/pp! (for the whole cruise!) We did a dummy booking last year to get the 123 promo, since we were unsure of its longevity. (it was a dummy booking as they were not showing 7 day Caribbean cruises 2 years out yet) I just booked next year through our online TA with the 123 promo, and got $225 more OBC (so will cancel our dummy booking). We had to book a CC to get this--but with the benefits (that we would pay for anyway), it runs us $500/wk--you would be hard pressed to find an interior for that price)
Semi Retired Posted February 8, 2015 #8 Share Posted February 8, 2015 Royal Caribbean will let you do a price adjustment before final payment date and add bonuses if a new promo is added to your sailing., so I tend to keep track and get these adjustments and bonuses. Princess won't, so I have asked my travel agent to call Princess and have their agent cancel and rebook my cabin so I don't loose it. They can do this because they have 2 booking screens in front of them. I'm not sure of other cruiselines.
sail7seas Posted February 8, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 8, 2015 Be sure to verify if your TA (if you use one) charges a cancellation fee and verify you can transfer any insurance you may have already purchased. If you cancel and rebook the same cruise you need to be careful about pre-existing coverage if that is an issue for you.
