Norwegian newspaper can now tell you that Francesco Schettino got 16 years for the killing 32 people onbord Costa Concordia.

[it is hard to believe he only got 16 years. The poor families of the deceased got a life sentence. Considering the lies he told about 'falling into a lifeboat' and how he ignored instructions to return to the vessel makes the 16 years sentence a joke. So this is Italian justice?

According to USA news sources, 16 years in prison is the MAXIMUM he will serve. The actual sentencing is still to come.

Looking at the sentences handed out by US courts (or Canadian, for that matter) 16 years is pretty stiff. Imagine if this had happened elsewhere with a ship registered in Liberia or Panama. I'd say Italian justice is about as good as it gets in this case.

16 years but will he ever see the inside of a prison? The appeals system in Italy allows the appellant to remain free while it grinds on, possibly for years.
