MS Koningsdam - Why is Tromso not on the itinerary?

Hoping someone has guesses/answers.... I was comparing the Voyage of the Midnight Sun on the MS Koningsdam in 2016 to a similar voyage on the MS Ryndam in 2015. The MS Koningsdam and MS Ryndam both go up to the North Cape/Article Circle on 14 day cruises but only the MS Ryndam stops at the Port of Tromso. Looks like the MS Koningsdam has a sea day right after Honningsvag where they could stop in Tromso. I wonder why the MS Koningsdam doesn't go to Tromso? The MS Koningsdam has 5 sea days, any chance that a port is added after the itinerary is published? Thanks!!

Itineraries sometimes change but don't count on it.

I wonder if the size of the ship could have something to do with it? I know Prinsendam gets into some ports other (larger) ships cannot. Maybe Tromso won't accommodate Koningsdam.

I just did some checking on ships visiting Tromso and in June 2016 the MSC Splendida will visit - and it is larger than the Koningsdam. A couple of other larges ships too.

We were on the Ryndam in 2013 and we docked at Tromso, the outer port. There was a bigger ship next to us but I don't remember which one, They also have a port at the doorsteps to the central city and we saw the Ocean Princess there.

One possible reason IMO: if they stopped in Tromso for 8 to 10 hours they would have to increase their speed to get to the next port on time. More speed means more fuel cost. Also, they would lose revenue from not having the casino and shops open for that time, and have increased port costs.

Maybe the port is "full" with other ships....

 

But I would bet more money on sea days = more money for HAL in on board spending and less money on fuel in making a high speed run.

 

To the OP - I highly doubt HAL would add a stop to a published itinerary. Yes, you can always count on a chance of a cancellation or substitution, but rarely an addition - especially since they have already calculated the port taxes and fees. Stranger things have happened though.

We cruised from Tromso on Silversea and I recall going under the bridge. Perhaps she will not fit, and/or there is no port availability on the date needed.

 

This is a bit of trivia that Tromso has the most northern Burger King in the world (and the most expensive too).

Port availability is probably a serious consideration; Summer Solstice is probably when the most cruise ships are sailing up that way.
