Ship2shoreCO Posted February 27, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 27, 2015 On the European cruises, do the ships charge in dollars or euros? Are the electric outlets American or European style?
srlafleur Posted February 27, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 27, 2015 On board the ships, everything is the same as if they were sailing the Caribbean (or elsewere). No need for converters or other currency. The same can't be said for on land, pre or post cruise.
Ship2shoreCO Posted February 27, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted February 27, 2015 On our Alaska cruise, I remember buying a drink on board while we were in port in Victoria. I can't remember if they charged me in Canadian dollars, added provincial sales tax, or both. I just remember there being some weird quirk with that item on my bill. Happens in some U.S. ports as well.
Rare Clay Clayton Posted February 27, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 27, 2015 Most ships have dual electrical outlets - one with North American at 110v and another with european plug and 220?v. We usually bring our set of euro plugs along and use the 220v to charge our iphone/pad since they have an internal converter and will accept either voltage. NCL ships always operate on the dollar. All cabins have both types of electrical plugs.

Ship2shoreCO Posted February 28, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted February 28, 2015 They do not change the power systems when they travel somewhere else. Since the Jade has been NCL's year round Europe ship, I just wanted to be sure.
diathoney Posted February 28, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 28, 2015 Since the Jade has been NCL's year round Europe ship, I just wanted to be sure. Good question, but I've never had an issue with plugs on a cruise ship, even on typically euro lines like Costa. As another poster mentioned, be prepared for any pre or post cruise transportation or equipment charging. You may also want cash for ports. You can exchange on the ship (for an unfavorable conversion), get cash from some banks before you leave (with conversion rates) or make sure your ATM card will work in the ports and find a bank. Beware of Travelex ATMs in port buildings.

Ship2shoreCO Posted February 28, 2015 Author #11 Share Posted February 28, 2015 Actually, the Jade was originally in Hawaii. True, but the Jade has been in Europe for the past seven years and was in dry dock for renovations a few years ago. Given that, I don't see how my question was not a reasonable one to ask.
