Is it not possible to make a dining reservation on the Breakaway without prepayment?

If you make advance reservations online, you must pay (unless you have UDP) at the time you make the reservation. However, you can always wait until you are onboard and make reservations that you don't have to pay for in advance.

Pretty much this, whatever specialty restaurants that was not booked and paid via MyNCL before boarding is going to added to your onboard expense account which will be charged to your credit card and/or subtracted from the cash you deposit / onboard credit the night before the cruise ends.

You can make diner reservations in advance without paying if you have the UDP (you have to prepay for the UDP or get it free as a promotion in current deal), else you have to pay.
