We just booked a Celebrity cruise & this was the note beside the shore excursion that we wished to book. "Online reservations are not available. Please check onboard". Tried ringing the company.....very unhelpful.

Does anyone know if this means the excursion is fully booked, or do they hold some places to be booked by passengers onboard?

Celebrity is correct, they hold a percentage for onboard sales. Just finished a Princess cruise in February and tried to book a specialty restaurant for Valentines Day before we left but was told can only book once onboard well I tried first thing when we got onboard. But they were all booked up. It seems the people doing the second leg of their B2Bs had already booked. I wish Princess would save a few slots for folks just getting onboard. Lou

On the other hand, we took back-to-back cruises at the end of December on Princess. It was great that they let us make reservations for the specialty restaurants for the second cruise on the last night of the first cruise. That was one less thing to worry about doing on the turnaround day.

Actually specialty restaurants on Princess can only be booked on the ship and not ahead of time so it's different than the OP's situation. If you're flexible and not wanting a highly desirable date such as Valentine's Day, I would imagine you could have been able to get a ressie easily. We were given a complimentary dinner in Sabatinis and was informed this days into the cruise. The head waiter said we can go there the next night. On other cruises, the head waiter would often come by the tables in the MDR and ask if he can book a dinner for anyone.
