Hawaii cruises to and from West Coast

Question: We are thinking about a cruise out of Los Angeles to Hawaii, returning to Los Angeles also via ship. It's a 15 night cruise, I believe, with several days (3 or 4) 'at sea' both at the beginning and end of trip.

Are any days at sea warm? If so, how many? Or are temps too cool for sunning and other outdoor activities the entire at sea time?

When sailing to Mexico from L.A., at least the first full day out, or longer, is generally cold, warming up about halfway down the Baja peninsula. We were wondering what the story is with Hawaii and all those days at sea.

We want to totally avoid flying and would enjoy being at sea but not if every at sea day is cold. THANKS for any details anyone has on this issue.

What month are you planning on going?

I did SF to Hawaii in December 2013. I'd say by the third sea day (of 4), we were into legitimate tropical, beach-type weather, and it stayed that way while sailing around the Hawaiian Islands. 8 or 9 of the 15 days were warm for outside activities w/o needing outerwear. The rest, a hoodie or fleece was needed. This was December and from SF, so other seasons and from SoCal could be different.

There is a board on Cruise Critic devoted to cruising Hawaii, located here:

As mentioned, the first 1-3 days will be cool, and can be rough. Whether you can swim or not will vary each cruise, and whether the ship you are on has a pool that can be covered.

I just returned from the 15-day cruise on the Star Princess (2/27-3/14, RT from San Francisco).

We had unusually cool, windy, overcast weather the entire cruise, including the 4 days in the islands! We had a partially warm day in Honolulu & 1-2 days at sea, but certainly not what anyone expected.

Such weather is unusual for that cruise, but you never know. It's still a delightful cruise but be ready for surprises!
