mumtopugs Posted May 19, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2015 (edited) I'm so happy and so bummed at the same time. I booked the Legend to Alaska in September. It's totally a bucket list item and I'm taking my sister for her 50th birthday. YAYYYY!!! Due to work only one cruise worked with the dates I need. I delayed a little and the price went up several hundred dollars. I was only able to afford an interior. BOOOOOOO. I feel like I'm missing out by not having a balcony on this one. I just got back from a cruise so I'm hoping for a casino bounce back offer but I'm not optimistic. I know it sounds silly that I'm bummed about cruising to Alaska lol maybe I'll sell a kidney between now and then ;) I need to hear that I should be grateful! Hahahha Edited May 19, 2015 by mumtopugs

Be grateful that you are going on a cruise:) also be grateful that you dont need to get a new kidney. I mean this respectfully. Just remember that you are very fortunate to be able to cruise, and also very fortunate to have the health to do so. Forget about the balcony, and just enjoy your cruise.:)
theriac Posted May 19, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 19, 2015 I think just the experience is worth it. Being on the Legend it's not an inside passage cruise and only one real sea day I think an interior is fine. I would take that money and do the Tracy Arm Explorer trip instead of staying on the ship. It should also leave you with extra money to do an excursion you may be on the fence about because of cost. I was fortunate to get a pack and play offer for the Legend this June and am extremely excited. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. Maybe if it was inside passage and going to glacier bay with 2 sea days but on Carnivals 7 day cycle from Seattle I think an interior will be fine. This will be my first Alaskan Cruise too so I don't really know, but what I said is how I feel about it.
DHnDWplus2 Posted May 19, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 19, 2015 Be grateful! An inside will be fine. The scenary is just as beautiful from public spaces. Have fun! Sent from my SPH-L710 using Forums mobile app

Hahahha Next time check other cruise lines. Carnival is usually more expensive since they only have 1 ship to fill. Princess is forever sending me deals to Alaska for around $499 Enjoy your cruise. Rare Tapi Posted May 19, 2015 #7 Share Posted May 19, 2015 I would've also looked at other cruise lines. Not only are they more established in Alaska, but they have a larger number of ships and itineraries, and to better destinations, including Glacier Bay and Sitka. And as others mentioned, many times pricing tends to decrease closer to departure on other cruise lines simply because they have so many ships in Alaska. Carnival, with only one ship, has a tendency to increase prices (and for a crappier, less convenient itinerary). When we sailed on Holland America, we ended with a complimentary upgrade to a balcony, several price drops, and a kids sail free promotion. By the time it was all said and done, we spent less than for our 4 day Bahamas cruise the next summer!
mumtopugs Posted May 19, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted May 19, 2015 Thanks!! I'm getting more excited reading these posts. I will def be doing some cool excursions! I looked around at prices and everyone was kind of the same. Then I asked for time off from work. By the time they got back to me, the price had gone up. I have an exact set of days I can sail. Couldn't really have worked it any other way but this cruise :/ I am already asking off for my cruise next year so this doesn't happen. Rare Tapi Posted May 19, 2015 #9 Share Posted May 19, 2015 I booked the Legend to Alaska in September. Did you book Early Saver? If not, why don't you look at Holland, Princess or many of the other cruise lines in Alaska which may offer you a better deal, specially closer to departure. Since we are still a few months out, you may be able to get a better rate on a nicer itinerary and then cancel Carnival. September is the end of the season, and last minute deals on other cruise lines are not uncommon.
nybumpkin Posted May 19, 2015 #10 Share Posted May 19, 2015 As much as I love balconies and enjoyed having one last year in Alaska, an inside will be just fine. Michelle, the naturalist on board, will tell you where to look for wildlife. If you're on a public deck you can walk from one side of the ship to the other. Not happening if you're out on your balcony. I always remember a post from John Heald last year about the woman complaining that while her balcony cabin was on the starboard side, all the whales were on the port side.:p
Rare Tapi Posted May 19, 2015 #11 Share Posted May 19, 2015 (edited) As much as I love balconies and enjoyed having one last year in Alaska, an inside will be just fine. We would've been fine without the balcony since we were doing most of the "hardcore" viewing from the open decks so that we could get a 360 degree view anyway, specially on the glacier viewing day. But with so many hours of daylight, and the ever changing scenery practically 24 hours a day, it was awesome to have a balcony. More than once I found myself in my stateroom relaxing, and all of a sudden I'd see a whale tail come out of the water, or eagles fly by, so I would quickly open the balcony door and watch. We would've thoroughly enjoyed our cruise without a balcony because we spent so much time away from our stateroom and we saw the most dramatic scenery from the open decks. But having a balcony made the entire experience that much more enjoyable. Edited May 19, 2015 by Tapi

theriac Posted May 20, 2015 #13 Share Posted May 20, 2015 There are like 3 maybe 4 sailings going to glacier bay, the rest of the sailings go to Tracy Arm Fjord. The end of the season when glacier bay opens up more the Legend can make it there. If you look at all the sailings starting in June until end of August are Tracy Arm. europe14 Posted May 20, 2015 #14 Share Posted May 20, 2015 We went on a cruise to Alaska a few years ago in an inside cabin. Truthfully, I think it would have been to cool for a balcony anyway, even in August when we went.
