Canadians - Current Exchange Rate?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Will be sailing NCL first time in Oct 2016 from Venice. Have booked in Can $ but am wondering once onboard Jade in 2016 Venice will we be charged in Euros or US. Can we still then buy OBC before we cruise in CAN and cash in for US or will it be Euros. Have cruised before and cruise line charged in Euros... Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

All NCL ships are in US $ for on board expenses and purchases including OBC which can be paid in Cdn $ at the NCL exchange rate (which may or may not vary from market rate)

How are people getting 1.1 right now? I did mock bookings and even called NCL and the exchange rate is 1.19. Any suggestion?

Thank you

It varies anywhere from 1.11 to 1.29 at the moment depending on the sailing and itinerary. The rate of exchange has not been applied fleetwise like say Princess cruiseline.

We are a bit lucky with our next november cruise on breakaway, we have an exchange rate of 7.5% ($100 obc is $107.53)

Might get some extra OBC before leaving.

Nope. It must depend on when you booked. My 2016 sailing is 1.11.

If you use a TA, it's also depend on when THEY booked their cabins lot.

My dad just cancelled a January 2016 cruise from one TA to switch to another which had better price. His rate went from 1.19 to 1.07 like me.

Same cruise, same date.. It's a huge win for him since he save about $500 on the cabin + better rate for everything else.

Nope. It must depend on when you booked. My 2016 sailing is 1.11.

If you booked a 2016 cruise back in 2014, the exchange rate was 1.075 to 1.16, so you are locked in at that low rate, unless you cancel and rebook to get promos, etc, then you are stuck with the new rate.

NCL knows what the current exchange rate is, and they are very smart to offer a lower one to Canadians.

As a fellow Canadian, I always book directly with NCL and keep an eye on the prices myself (control issues :)) If the price drops enough to warrent a conversation, I have a little chat with them and they fix me right up with the new deal. Sometimes it may take more than one phone call since not all customer service people are accommodating but I keep calling them until I get what I want (POLITELY). NCL always invoices me in CDN and then everything I purchase through their site is priced in CDN, including OBCs. I buy enough OBC to cover the cabin deposit plus any additional $$ I think I will be spending on board. For me, its just easier to purchase everything through NCL because the site tells me exactly what I am paying as opposed to what the CC company will charge on any given day. :D

If I buy obc do I still need to give them my credit card for a deposit? Does anyone know how much the deposit is? I already prepaid my dining package, excursions and gratuities.

It is an outright purchase , the same as the other items you have already bought at CDN rates.

I know it's not possible to cashout OBC given by NCL or TA, but How NCL know which is which?

We have $100 free OBC for our next cruise and have $400 that we paid for (at 1.07). I wonder if we get more and have some left, would they refuse to cashout $100 even if we spend the rest?

Wouldn't want to have $1000 OBC, having $500 left at the and of the cruise and loose $100 because they don't want to cashout this.

I need some help trying to figure this out. When I go in to my NCL account, it confirms my prices are in CDN. Le Bistro is showing $23.54 CDN which includes the 18% gratuity. I'm not sure what the US charge is for Le Bistro, but I'm assuming it's $20.00 plus gratuity. I may be wrong. Does this mean I'm getting it at par?

I went on and purchased $300 in On-Board Certificates, and my CC was charged $300 CDN. Does this mean when we board, this will be showing in our account, OR do they actually put certificates in our cabin? Sorry...it may be a stupid question, but I have never purchased on board certificates before. So if they are showing in our account and let's say I purchase $1000 CDN in total. Our service charges per day will be $27 US. Are you saying they will take the $27 US at whatever exchange rate NCL is giving me....at par or 1.11 (booked Dec 2014 for 2015 cruise) out of the account?

I want to be really clear on this as we are 4 couples cruising and before I tell them they should all do this, I want to make sure this is correct.

I assume we would still be providing them with our CC number for the account, but it would not be charged until the on-board credit has been used up?

Thank you in advance.

It sounds like your exchange rate is at par based on your OBC purchase.

You should prepay your daily service charge. You will be paying in CDN at your exchange rate and think you may get it at the old rate before the increase.

Sorry forgot to include

All currency exchange is done when you purchased in advance. OBC should be on your account in USD. All onboard charges will show in USD.

The one question I have is if you have have an outstanding balance at cruise end will it be charged at your locked in exchange rate?

All outstanding balances charged at the end of the cruise are in $US.

All previous cruises were booked in USD

So on CDN fund booked cruises final account charges will be charged at USD and CC company will converted at current exchange rates.

That could make a final poorly calculated casino withdrawal pretty expensive.

If I have excess OBC remaining will it be refunded in USD and converted by CC company or will NCL convert at locked in rate and refund in CDN

I have learned a lot from this thread. We booked 2 cruises (Jan and Feb 2017 ) and the rate was $1.15.

I won a free 7 day cruise ($1000 USD) and increase it to a 14 day cruise. NCL Finance Dept would not give me the additional cost in CDN $. Any suggestion on how I can buy OBC in Canadian dollars?

Is this a 14 day cruise that actually has a 7 day part A and 7 day B ? Could you book them separately ?

As a Canadian traveller, I have always booked directly with NCL and I ask them to invoice me in CDN. Once I'm booked everything I purchase online is in CDN including OBC.

Is the free cruise in addition to the 2 booked cruises? Is it after these cruises?

If you have any CDN rate cruise before the free one ask if OBC can be used to buy gift cards.

If you can and have a CDN rate cruise before the free one then load up on OBC on the CDN rate one, Use OBC to buy gift cards and use gift cards on US rate cruise to buy OBC.

Can the gift cards be bought in Canadian funds? When I called and asked they told me no. If I was given erroneous information that would in fact be great.
