Rare sandinmyshoes Posted June 4, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2015 An important tip the room steward did not tell us about on NCL. (We were on the Breakaway last week.) If you have a balcony cabin, the main handle says to pull down to lock the door. This does not actually lock the door from the outside. There is a separate lock at the top of the balcony door that really locks it where someone can not access your room from the outside. My sister had one of the angled balcony cabins. Because of the angle, it is very easy to hop over the railing onto the neighbor's balcony. The college age men in the room next door did this very thing and stole all of the booze from my sister's minibar. Thank goodness she had her diamond ring and electronics locked in the safe. The ship tried to charge her the $127 of the alcohol, but eventually reversed the charges after several hours of us hassling with upper management. Lesson learned…make double sure, your balcony door is locked so no one from outside can access your room.
kba1988 Posted June 4, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 4, 2015 WOW....thanks for the tip. Didn't even know that, and we sailed a mini-suite multiple times....
Planefixer Posted June 4, 2015 #3 Share Posted June 4, 2015 How did you know it was the occupants of the other room?
Ilovesailing Posted June 4, 2015 #4 Share Posted June 4, 2015 (edited) This not something I would worry about on board and there too many camera's on board to count including covering all balcony area's. I also think the lock above is for child safety Edited June 4, 2015 by Ilovesailing
june123 Posted June 4, 2015 #5 Share Posted June 4, 2015 When we were on the Epic recently my husband was on our balcony just after the rooms were opened up on embarkation day and he saw the occupants two cabins down open up the little door connecting the balconies and change the balcony furniture over and then close and relock the door . We were worried about this in case they should open up the balcony doors again and try to get into our cabin . We reported this to our cabin steward who told us to use the lock at the top of the door to ensure no one could enter from the balcony . We have never bothered doing this before but we will ensure this lock is used whenever we`re not in our cabin in future .

I think balcony rail hopping is why it's no longer "legal" to open the balcony divider even with connecting rooms.
