tantine Posted July 8, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2015 So excited for our Breakaway cruise to Bermuda in 1 month! But I just realized that my kids' (ages 8 and 11)passports expired in May. I have read that closed circuit US travel(starting and ending in the US doesn't require passports) but I want to make sure. Do I pay the money to get them rushed or can I bring their birth certificates?
ColinIllinois Posted July 8, 2015 #2 Share Posted July 8, 2015 Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Or Canada & New England Cruises For round-trip sailings (cruises that depart from and return to the same U.S. port), you may sail with either a valid passport, proof of citizenship and a valid government-issued photo I.D. (driver’s license with a photo), or any other WHTI compliant document. Proof of Citizenship examples include: State certified U.S. birth certificate Original certificate of U.S. naturalization Original certificate of U.S. citizenship U.S. Consular report of your birth abroad. Baptismal paper, hospital certificates of birth and Puerto Rico birth certificates issued prior to 7/1/10 are not acceptable. A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 do not require a government-issued photo ID.
Sauer-kraut Posted July 8, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 8, 2015 Just their certified birth certificates are all you need.

You will hear from all the people about how you need to have passports because you might need to hurry back, etc. The truth is that your cruise is a closed loop cruise and your children can travel with just their birth certificates, a passport is not required. hansolosmom Posted July 8, 2015 #5 Share Posted July 8, 2015 Like others have said just use their bc's for this cruise & after you get back have them renewed. I wouldn't get them renewed prior to the cruise because I'd be too nervous everything wouldn't make it back in time.
JPV072900 Posted July 9, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 9, 2015 Back in 2008, we were getting ready to board the NCL Dream. As we're in line, someone from security said you need to have your passports ready. I looked at him and said I don't need a passport. I only have a BC. He again stated I needed a BC. I looked and laughed. I knew the rules of the land. Needless to say I had no problems with my BC. And I didn't have any problems last year and I don't foresee any problems in 10 days!!! kutty77 Posted July 9, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 9, 2015 I know that you can sail with a BC and don't really need a passport but what if there is an emergency? Can you fly home with just a BC?
