onboard safe/computer questions

Couple of quick questions that I hope someone can answer. Considering getting the social package so my wife can use Facebook. Not sure she can go a week without it.

 

How big are the in room safes? Big enough for a small (14") laptop?

 

Do the onboard computers have a SD slot where she could load pictures to Facebook?

Every safe that I've seen has been too small for a laptop. It's generally just big enough for a camera, wallets, passports, and other small things.

 

Haven't used the onboard computers, so I can't answer that one.

In my experience, I could barely fit my iPad Mini in the safe, let alone a full sized laptop. I don't think the onboard computers in the computer bar have SD readers. The Freedom (I assume that's what you're asking about) had older computers when we were on it in November.

When we travel I password my laptop and slip it in a drawer when we leave the cabin.

I can't imagine a cabin steward would risk it all to steal a laptop and if the laptop is in a drawer nobody just casually passing by can see it.;)

Always bring on laptop and get an internet plan. Sometimes it is convenient to use ships computer especially if we are walking past internet cafe.

I always leave my laptop on the desk. A steward would NEVER steal your laptop, how obvious. One morning we hastily went to breakfast and left several hundred dollars of casino chips on the table, of course they were still there when we returned.

I always bring my laptop, but never use the ship's internet as I object to the price. I take my laptop ashore, and usually find a close bar with wi-fi so I can enjoy a local beer and do email at the same time.

 

I have seen safes that might be large enough for a 14" laptop, but have never put mine in there. I just keep it in a drawer and have had no issues.

 

For what it's worth, I have come back onboard the ship with a bottle (of rum, usually) in the backpack with the laptop. Every time I have done this, security sees the laptop in my backpack on the x-ray but not the bottle so they don't ask me to hand it over.

The safes I've seen were definitely not big enough. For land-based vacations I've purchased this from amazon but never brought a computer on a ship. It securely attaches your laptop to a heavy piece of furniture if you laptop has a lock port (which most do.)

Like others, I have traveled with laptops and we always have at least 2 tablets. Over nearly 40 cruises across 6 cruise lines, we've never had an issue. Generally I put laptops in a drawer or back in their bag. We've routinely left cell phones and tablets out charging also with no problems.

They are introducing a new system which is supposedly a lot faster.

 

Do agree with silly telling the world your not at home.

I think I put an iPad in the safe before. But it was very tight. So 14" laptop will be impossible.

 

We just put our laptop (10") and iPad in a drawer, and put my camera bag in a closet. It was fine.

We take iPads and iPhones and leave them in the room. If the kids left them on a bed, they're always nicely put on a desk or counter when we return. No issues or problems. Plus with the iCloud locking system, unless you know the password, the iPad is worthless

Because the drawer and closet are so hidden, or is it just a feel good thing? I would like to know with the millions of cruise passengers if anyone has ever had a laptop stolen from their room? where would your cabin steward hide it?

I go on a cruise to get away from tech. We put phones on airplane mode then switch off, lock them in the safe till the end of cruise. No safes are not large enough for laptops.

The safes don't even hold a standard iPad. I trust my room steward not to bother my things. However, I recommend that computers, cameras, etc. be out of sight - remember that the door is open while they are cleaning. I wouldn't put it past someone to try to slip in while the steward is cleaning the bathroom. I know it's not likely, but why tempt anyone?

She can post to FB using either a tablet or a phone. We lugged a laptop last time, didn't even take it out of the bag, my tablet was just too easy!

Laptop likely will not fit. Mines did not.

 

People on these boards really need to stop assuming everyone's situation is the same as their own. Just because some people's house is empty when they cruise/vacation, doesn't mean that holds true for everyone. My BIL lives with us, so even though we'll be gone, our home will still be occupied...as it also was on our first cruise when the kids and my MIL stayed home. So no harm in telling anyone we're not home.
