SkY BAR & SMOKING

We have just returned from Sojourn and saw smokers frequently outside the Square, and a couple of times on the verandah on starboard side. We did not use the observation lounge.

From my (limited) understanding, unless you're sailing with a specific someone on board you're unlikely to encounter a smoker in the Observation lounge.

It is absolutely a lottery as to whether you encounter no, few, or many smokers. We have had differing numbers on each cruise we have done, sadly occasionally with a pipe smoker outside the Square, otherwise a nice quiet place to sit. Yes, smoking is allowed sitting at the bar in the Sky Bar, so percolates to the non-smoking tables. More often than not there are very few smokers, thank goodness.

The sooner the rules change the better - however, in the meantime those who prefer Seabourn to other lines will no doubt continue to travel with it, while making our opinions clear to management.

I was amused recently on a Regent ship - whose main cheerleader is constantly mentioning Seabourn's policy - that there was a horribly strong smell of cigarettes on the pool deck, where there are comfy sofas in a corner for the smokers! Yes, the only indoor smoking is in a special little room, thank goodness, but the atmosphere anywhere near the smoking area on the pool deck was unpleasant.

We were on Regent Voyager three or four years back. There was only one outside bar and they allowed smoking at it including cigars which made it unusable for us. There was a smoking lounge but they also allowed smoking at the casino and in another of the lounges.

To be fair to Regent, there was no smoking indoors apart from the small special room(although there could have been in the casino, I would not know) but there was only one outdoor bar, unlike Seabourn, which does give you the choice of the pool deck with the patio bar and no smoking on that deck. I was mainly surprised as the Regent big cheerleader goes on a lot about all the smoking on Seabourn, as if there is no problem on Regent. I should add that for various reasons, and not the smoking, we will not be cruising with Regent again.

Currently on Odyssey, there are a handful of smokers who occasionally congregate at 5 tables on the starboard side of Deck 9 near the bar, less so also starboard outside SB Square. Sometimes no one is there, sometimes someone is sitting at each table. But there is so much outside ventilation in both areas, especially when at sea (breezes) that unless you have truly terrible asthma, it should not be a health problem people to get a sniff here and there. There was more smoke I noticed locally from people at the ports in Bulgaria and in Rumania and in Istanbul than on the ship. As I am not bothered by a bit of outdoor smoke here and there, if the pool area tables looks crowded, though I do not smoke, I just seat myself in the smoking areas so as to make more room for people who are finicky about micromolecules of smoking exposure.

We are booked on a Seabourn Cruise leaving shortly. We are looking forward to it, and will enjoy the cruise thoroughly. I don’t know if it would have made any difference in our decision, but I am shocked that passenger health is at risk, by allowing smoking in proximity to passengers. Smoking kill. and I know far too many people who have suffered from it. I will certainly change locations to the extent possibly away from any adjacent smoker. What possible justification in this day and age could allow smoking in public areas on ships?

Money. Seabourn has a few passengers that have been with the line since the start. Unfortunately these passengers smoke and due to the amount they've spent and continue to spend Seabourn seems to cater to their habits. Also I believe lines that have tried to go entirely non smoking followed the Dodo.
