8/23 Norwegian Breakaway - Possible Weather Issue

I hope that the Bermuda part of this trip is not affected.

According to NOAA.GOV

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=atlc&fdays=5

A broad surface trough interacting with an upper-level low is

producing a few showers to the southeast through southwest of

Bermuda. A non-tropical low pressure system could form over the

western Atlantic in the vicinity of Bermuda during the next few

days. However, environmental conditions are only somewhat favorable

for subsequent tropical or subtropical development of this system

over the weekend while it moves slowly northward.

* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent

* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...40 percent

I hope you purchased insurance. :)

We got lashed by Hurricane/Tropical Storm Fay last year off the coast of Bermuda. Spent 12 hours rockin’ and rollin’ until the Bermuda authorities let us dock seven hours late.

When we departed, the storm wasn’t forecasted to be a severe storm and it wasn’t forecasted to have a direct hit on Bermuda.

Wanting to know how my trip insurance would have helped….

Or, vive Quebec ... Bonjour-Hi.

Oh, Canada ... here we go.

Not quite, been to Halifax, NS lately - plan B might be calling for a northbound trip, almost perfect for a bit of fresh-live-juicy Atlantic/NE & Maine lobster (late in the season, soft shells are gone) ... maybe stops in Boston & Bar Harbor and even Newport, RI.

Not sure, of course, if the BA can sail into some of the ports as tendering might be required :D

Anyone booking a cruise this time of the year don't realized it's the peak weeks for hurricane :D are in for the ride, sometimes a bit more rocking & rolling than usual. "Katrina" made landfall against the US mainland just before Labor Day weekend but Sandy was late with a Halloween special. Think positive - it can be worst & still too early to tell. :p

I am cruising next week on the Breakaway and I know there is a risk of an itinerary change. I will follow the weather and pack accordingly. I am prepared to be diverted to New England/ Canada or Florida/Bahamas. Hey I'm on a cruise vacation so it is all good.

I am on that cruise and have been watching the weather obsessively. My only hope is this mess moves to the east before it gets a chance to organize itself. 3 days in a tropical storm docked in Bermuda, after all that planning, would be so very disappointing.

Fingers, toes, legs crossed that it moves out of the way by next Wednesday ! (And doesn't swoop back in while we're there)

Yep, I'll be on a ship and that's all that matters.

We had a ship encounter with Hurricane Katia years ago; it passed.

I know people mean well posting things like this, but we can't control the weather and I'm not going to sweat it. I'm going on the cruise. Rain, shine, or anything else.

happy and fun thoughts. . .

Oh no! My very first cruise is this Sunday- Ok, so what do they do in these instances? I was nervous before, now I'm going to be worse....

Relax and enjoy your trip - watch a movie, play bingo, go to tastings, watch the beauty and awe of a raging storm in the ocean from behind a window, etc. Because sometimes Mother Nature just doesn't play nice when we want her to...[emoji21]

As others have said, if there is a threat of hurricaine, they will change the itinerary. They will not pur anyone's safety at risk. Try to relax and just have a good time.

Well, it's August and you booked a sea-based vacation headed out of NY. I am guessing rougher seas/ storms are more likely than not. No reason for insurance though per se- most cruises go. They just may go on a revised itinerary or it may be rocking and rolling more that usual

That's what I thought too. Until they drove us into the storm and spent 12 hours pitching and yawing before docking at 6pm.

"In advance of Fay, a tropical storm watch was issued on October 10, and upgraded to a tropical storm warning the next day. Additionally, in response to the storm's unexpected strengthening, a hurricane watch was posted at 21:00 UTC on October 11.[10] All public schools on the island were closed for the storm.[10] Bus and ferry services were canceled due to the dangerous conditions,[11] and two cruise liners delayed their arrival into port to avoid the storm"

Respectfully I think the majority would disagree. To have to be indoors for a week on a cruise with 4000 of your closest friends would be disastrous.

But if it doesn't, you'll get a trip to Canada:D:eek:

Our neighbors north of the border came down to NY to sail southward and won't be thrilled to head for Nova Scotia or New England, that's for sure but it is what it is  and terms of the cruise contract ... "captive" audience once final payment is made (sorry ;) ) and decision to substitute ports or divert, change or delay and reverse port stops, etc. won't happen until that final 24 to 48 hours, up to the sailaway time.

BA will probably, leaving from NY or even when it's docking at PC, FL will and take on extra provisions in case the ship is "stranded" at sea and need to float a bit until the next port - along with extra fuel ... in the unlikely event of a major hurricane.

I say don't worry too much ... BA is 140,000 tons, give or take - the size of an aircraft carrier and mini-floating city at sea, fairly self-contained with fresh water systems and can take care of itself, with the captain & senior officers on the bridge - and, steer/navigate around some of these "minor" tropical storm.

Those with upper deck & especially AFT or extreme FWD suites & balconies, you will likely spend less time "outside" with the wind & rain. BA is a "tall" ship compared to the Dawn/Jewel class ships built for Atlantic crossing (and, can go faster than the *Away class.) Outdoor decks will likely be closed and the pools drained empty, and the Waterfront was closed for a full day ++ when we had 15' waves & strong wind, for safety reasons. But, it was relatively smooth - just minor "chops" and motion for us - we're almost all the way forward on deck 10.

It wasn't fun with 4,500 to 4,900 people packed indoors - the buffets became the lounge for playing cards and the restaurants had huge lines, and, you had to squeeze into the casino ...

*** Another tip: stay tuned to the NCL website, as changes or last minute update are "usually" posted there to alert those scheduled to sail. Ship's satellite internet will always connect - for free - to the same NCL dot com site while at sea ... and, a free working link to a weather site with forecast update used to be available (not sure if I saw that on our last 2 BA sailing in 2014 or 2015)

Invest L97 could wind up being nothing. The models of it also show it being clear of Bermuda by Wednesday, when the Breakaway arrives.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The forecast for our trip last week was predicting rain every day. It didn't rain at all and the weather was perfect each day. You can't control the weather, just need to be prepared to go with the flow.
