happy 2 b cruising Posted August 24, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2015 Arriving in June at the Port. We would like to do Dun Laoghaire Ireland on our own. Any must see sights in Dublin? How much would it cost to take a Taxi from the pier into Dublin? I was told it is a 45 minute drive? Cruise ship transportation is $55.75 p.p. round trip. Would really appreciate any advice you may have, thank-you.
Mairnealach Posted August 24, 2015 #2 Share Posted August 24, 2015 Hi, Dun Laoghaire is a suburb of Dublin and is situated seven miles south-east of the city centre. The quoted driving time of forty five minutes is probably based on travelling in the morning rush period, between 07:00 – 09:00hrs, when the roads are clogged with cars heading into the city. The reverse will apply when returning in the evening. A taxi would be very expensive with the meter ticking over all the time it is stuck in traffic. The best way of getting into the city is to use the suburban train service called the DART. The DART operates every 15/20 minutes and the journey time is twenty minutes. The current cost of a day return ticket is €6. Dun Laoghaire rail station is situated beside the sea front, a short distance from where you disembark. You get off the DART at Pearse station for the Grafton Street shopping area, Trinity College, National Museum, and National Gallery. A lot of visitors recommend the HoHo bus as the best way of getting an overview of the city in the short time available. This is the link to the state-run Dublin Bus site: http://www.dublinsightseeing.ie/citytour.aspx If you wish to board the HoHo bus at its first stop in O'Connell Street, which would give you the best chance of getting a favoured upstairs seat, then get off the DART at Tara Street station, the next stop after Pearse station. Here is a list of Dublin's top ten attractions, by number of visitors, in 2014. http://www.visitdublin.com/top-10-dublin-attractions/ If you have any queries on the various attractions, please let me know and I will do my best to answer them. happy 2 b cruising Posted August 24, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted August 24, 2015 Thank-you, Dermot! You gave me a different mode of transportation that we could try. 6 euros vs $55.75 p.p. WOW. The cruise line seems way out of line for their transportation cost. How far a distance from the port to the Dart? Can't manage to much walking. prish Posted August 25, 2015 #4 Share Posted August 25, 2015 We are just back from a British Isles cruise and were also supposed to dock at Dun Laoghaire, though it was later changed to Dublin port, much closer to town. We were told this happens quite frequently, so you might want to check closer to your sail date. We had an overnight there and both days stayed back in Dublin after our tours, later took a taxi back to the ship. Cost about 12 euros, we were three of us, so that worked well. BTW, if you are looking for a tour guide I would strongly recommend Derek Smith of Beautiful Meath Tours, he was absolutely terrific and we had two fabulous days with him. happy 2 b cruising Posted August 25, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted August 25, 2015 Thank-you for your reply. Didn't realize ships could dock at two different ports. Our ship will be in port until 8:00 p.m. what sights did you like the best on your tour?
Mairnealach Posted August 25, 2015 #6 Share Posted August 25, 2015 Thank-you, Dermot! You gave me a different mode of transportation that we could try. 6 euros vs $55.75 p.p. WOW. The cruise line seems way out of line for their transportation cost. How far a distance from the port to the Dart? Can't manage to much walking. Dun Laoghaire is a tender port and whether the tenders berth at the east or west pier it is, in either case, a five minute walk to the train station. Dublin city centre is compact and Grafton Street, National Museum, National Gallery, and Trinity College are within five minute walking distance of each other and Pearse rail station. If you want to visit the Guinness Storehouse, then the HoHo bus stops outside the entrance. Admission is free to the Museum and Gallery. As prish states, cruise ships berth at both Dublin Port and Dun Laoghaire. At the former, ships berth at the quayside while the latter is a tender port. Dublin Port is industrial and nearer to the city centre. Many cruise lines operate a shuttle bus from the port to the city centre, or a taxi will cost around €12-15. Dun Laoghaire is an attractive, suburban, recreational harbour with a yachting marina.
prish Posted August 25, 2015 #7 Share Posted August 25, 2015 Thank-you for your reply. Didn't realize ships could dock at two different ports. Our ship will be in port until 8:00 p.m. what sights did you like the best on your tour? As Mairnealach says Dun Laoghaire is a tender port though at Dublin port you just walk off the ship onto the quay. Our cruise line Celebrity had a shuttle, I believe it cost $15 for the round trip. We had an overnight in Dublin, sail away was at 11pm on Day 2, so we had both evenings in town also. Re tours, we did Newgrange/Boyne Valley one day and Wicklow/Glendalough the next day, both absolutely fabulous trips. We also did tours of Trinity College/Book of Kells as well as the Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, apart from Grafton Street, pub hopping, etc in the evenings. Our tour operator picked us up at the ship in the mornings and later dropped us off in the city after our tours, we then took a taxi back to the ship. Dublin is an extremely vibrant city and we loved just wandering around in the evenings and drinking in the ambience. The first evening was a big rugby game and the pubs were full with people watching the game. Ireland beat Scotland right at the end and you should have heard the roars from the fans, that was one evening :D

need2cruisesoon Posted August 25, 2015 #9 Share Posted August 25, 2015 Silhouette docked here, not many taxis (south side): Looking over to the other side of the port (Ocean terminal), that day Royal Princess at that berth:
