Hi, we are travelling on the MSC Fantasia in October & will be calling at Naples. My wife really wants to see Pompeii, so any advise on the best way of getting there, and ticket advise would be greatly appreciated - Cheers

I always struggle when people ask for the "best" way, as that implies a subjective judgement that is based on your values and interests. Only you can determine which option is best for you in this particular situation.

The main choices are a private car service, a taxi (there is a fixed fare of 90 Euro, with a two-hour stop at the ruins, but you could negotiate a longer stay for a higher fare), the Circumvesuviana local train, the state railroad, or the public SITA bus.

Because all of the transit companies involved use the UnicoCampania fare system the fee is the same for the trains or the bus.

Among the public transit options I find the public bus the best combination convenience and comfort but it only works for those with an early port call at Naples. Only the 8 AM departure for Pompei makes sense, after that you're better off with the Circumvesuviana.

Fantasia apparently stops in Naples from 1pm to 7pm.

The bus probably won't work for a 1 PM arrival in October. In the summer there's a 1:30 bus but not in the fall.

Best case is catching the 1:41 PM Circumvesuviana train, arriving to Pompei at 2:06 PM.

A 7 PM departure means an all-aboard of 6:30, which means being back on the train to Naples no later than 5 PM, or 4:30 to be on the safe side. That allows you a couple of hours to see the ruins, which is minimal but worth it.

Seems hardly worth calling at Napoli for such a short stop. With that port people want to go Capri or Pompei and that really needs a full day stop. Idiotic scheduling by a cruiseline more intent at being at sea it seems.

This itinerary hits 7 ports in 7 days, so I think it's a little harsh to accuse MSC of wanting to keep its passengers at sea… Not everyone needs more than 6 hours in Naples, but if you do, then yes, it would be idiotic to book this cruise.

Is it possible to do Sorrento and Pompei in one full day?

It depends on how long of a port stop you have. With a typical 12-hour stop it is certainly possible.

You could take the bus from the port area, or the tram to the local Circumvesuviana train to Pompei. If your arrival is at 7 AM you can be at the ruins when they open at 8:30. You could spend as much as four hours exploring the ruins and still be in Sorrento by lunch (using the Circumvesuviana train to get there from Pompei).

You can then return to Naples either by high speed boat or by the Circumvesuviana train.

Or you could reverse the order and go to Sorrento in the morning and Pompei in the afternoon.

Thanks so much for your recommendation. We do have the whole day in port. So I like that recommendation to do Pompei first then head over to Sorrento for the afternoon. I know there is a lot to take in and see at Pompei, but we are not really big history buffs nor do we have long attention spans so we'd prefer a short visit. Are there guided tours available or can we tour it on our own?

MSC has a habit of limiting port times (they can cruise slower and save fuel costs) which we have long felt is a good reason not to book many of their cruises. And with only 6 hours (which is probably less then 5 hours when considering time to disembark and then get back to the ship at least 30 min prior to departure) means you have little time to lose. You could always take a cruise line excursion, which is usually the most expensive option. If you go on your own you would probably be able to get to the ruins by 2:30. If using the train we would probably want to be leaving the ruins by about 4:45 (at the latest).
