madfisher Posted October 26, 2015 #1 Share Posted October 26, 2015 Hi all I have a friend who is severely disabled and would love to take a cruise. He is quite a big person and will require mechanical assistance for personal issues and getting into bed etc, he would need to take his own chair. Is there a cruise line out of Sydney that would cater for his needs. thanks

Kiwi Kruzer Posted October 26, 2015 #3 Share Posted October 26, 2015 Hi allI have a friend who is severely disabled and would love to take a cruise. Safety at sea would have to be the major consideration. While staff and crew would be assigned to help him into a lifeboat in an emergency he would still have to be capable of getting out again at the other end . That said there are some lines that are better than others in this respect. P&O Cruises , Oriana and Aurora have special lifts beside the pool , and wheelchair passengers can book in for staff to set it up and lower them into the pool. Can I suggest you try the following links as a starting point. One of these is my own review from Radiance of The Seas back in 2012. Disabled Cruise Travel on Cruise Critic http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=190 Cruises for Disabled Passengers http://www.cruisecritic.com.au/cruisestyles/area.cfm?area=30 Cruise reviews http://www.cruisecritic.com.au/memberreviews/styles/cruises-for-disabled/ My own review from 2012 on Radiance Of The Seas http://www.cruisecritic.com.au/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=96655 Ultimately you will need to confirm final details with the cruise line directly. They often have specialised staff to manage disabled or special needs customers. Hope this helps Mark.

shrekaus Posted October 27, 2015 #6 Share Posted October 27, 2015 On Sea Princess on the back deck pool area there is a spa with a hoist for wheelchair bound passengers.
Beanb41 Posted October 27, 2015 #7 Share Posted October 27, 2015 A hoist for getting in and out of the pool is somewhat different to requiring assistance to get in and out of bed as indicated by the OP. I would be surprised to find a cruise line that will take effectively what is an invalid unless the passenger has their own carer with them.
