I know there's been lots of discussion about food on NCL. I'm going to be sailing on the Getaway in early 2016 and would like to hear experiences with food specific to the Getaway in the last few months. What did you have that you loved and in what venue and was there an upcharge? Thanks for sharing your experiences! We have the UBP so we are going to need to consume a little food between all of the drinks we have on our list to try! ;)

We love to dine at Cagney's. (There is a charge...$35, I think but I'm not sure). Order a DOUBLE shrimp cocktail. The mac and cheese is a great side dish..I like the little (5oz) steak. Breakfast at the dining room is always good, and maybe I'm easy to please, but the buffet was great. I love their pretzel rolls...yum. the Calamari and lobster rolls are excellent at Ocean Blue ( again, an additional fee)...its on the Waterfront. At the Italian restaurant, I always order the pasta al olio with hot pepper flakes for a hearty pasta fix! Lots of good food to be had.

We're on the 12 day cruise right now and everything has been good. We're not foodies and have only done Le Bistro which was good and Illusionarium which we really enjoyed, food and show. Shanghai Noodle was really good and included. We've eaten at all the included places and there's good food choices in all. Buffet is very good and I don't often say that. The food is fresh & good.

People seem to love Cagney's.

So excited for your first cruise on the Getaway!! We did not go hungry during our cruise on her. My family and I are very bland eaters. Not adventurous....lol. We found all the complimentary dining to be excellent. The Garden Buffet was delicious, and buffets are not something you can say that about all the time. Food was always hot and fresh with way too many choices. Breakfast was always there for us!! Try a crepe at the crepe station. My favorite was nutella, strawberry, and whipped topping. At O'Shennans we loved the wings and fries. I had a tasty chicken sandwich in there too. The prime rib was good the night we got it there too! Gosh, I'm sorry I could go on and on :D

We really enjoyed our visit to the sushi bar on the Getaway! One night, we didn't feel hungry enough for a full meal in the MDR (which we always enjoyed greatly, btw) ... so we headed to the sushi bar for an appetizer and a sushi roll each. It was a great, light meal that was very inexpensive!

We LOVED the food on the Getaway- we did one specialty restaurant-Moderno's andit was AWESOME!!!! I am not a meat person but the chicken was fabulous, as well as the HUGE salad bar, sides, desserts and drinks! We had the UBP and I think I filled up on too many mojitos many days! :) Liquid does fill you up! :) We LOVED Shanghai's and had dinner there twice- just be sure to get in line 10 min or so before the open or there will be a long wait. We tried the lobster roll and calamari for a snack on day and it was good- but perhaps not really worth the cost ($18 for both). The buffet has late night snacks that are so yummy and fun and started a bad habit for us that we had to break when getting home! :) Nachos at 10:30 are not a good idea regularly! :) lol! The Tropicana was our favorite complimentary dining place as we went right at 5:30 and requested a table up fornt by the dance floor. The Burn the Floor cast performs in there 2-3 times during the week and they have a live band. Everything we ate was fabulous- you will love it!!!

We just sailed Getaway as our first NCL cruise. We had breakfast several times in Savor (one of the two smaller of the three MDRs) and were really impressed with the daily Chef specials....a croque madame once and a huevos rancheros...both delicious and most impressive was the perfectly cooked sunny side up egg!! My husband loved being able to get a cooked to order hamburger 24/7 at O'Sheehans. Oddly he had a better steak at La Cucina than at Cagney's... We loved having a coffee machine in the cabin. The Indian food at the buffet was really good as well. We also ate at Savor for lunch on embarkation day (so much nicer than fighting the crowds at the Buffet on that day!) and had the fried calamari which was great and the salmon burger. LOVED Getaway. Came home and cancelled our previous favorite ship, Celebrity Reflection (and we're Elite Plus with Celebrity) and booked Escape.

Loved the Waterfront concept both for just sitting and reading/drinking/staring at the ocean and the opportunity to eat outside if desired.

Just got off of her last weekend. This was my 12th cruise om various lines and the food on the Getaway is in First Place.

Cagneys was excellent. I had the Shrimp Cocktail and New York Strip with a baked potato and sauteed mushrooms as my sides. The steak was as good as I have ever had anywhere, land or sea. Very very flavorful and cooked perfectly. (Medium in my case). The sea salt caramel brownie for dessert was outstanding. My friends ordered bone in ribeyes and were very pleased.

We also at in Moderno. Very good but Cagneys was better overall.

Teppanyaki was also very good. I had the Shrimp/Chicken combo but would order the Shrimp/Filet if I were to dine there again.

The Garden Buffet really stood out to me. As a solo traveler I use the buffet more than most. Breakfast was really good with great selections. Bacon was always cooked properly. Biscuits and gravy are usually not great on a cruise ship but these were actually decent.

The omelet stations were really really good too. And they always had several stations up at peak times so waiting time was minimal.

Burgers were cooked fresh right there in front of you along with fries, etc.

Dinner offered a larger selection than usual for a buffet also. Lots of salad and veggie selections, soups, Asian, fresh made pizzas, etc. It would be hard not to find something that hit the spot.

There were carving stations with really nice cuts of meat.

You could get fresh dipped ice cream or soft serve.

Beverage stations were plentiful and well laid out.

Tip: There is a bar at the very aft of the buffet looking out towards the wake inside the Garden Buffet. Hit it for soft drinks if you have the package.

I ordered room service one night and since there was a charge, I ordered a variety. Fish and Chips were decent but not great. The burger was good but not as good as other areas on the ship.

The Cobb Salad was great! Very large, with turkey and fresh bacon as well as boiled eggs and very good greens, tomatoes etc.

OSheehans is a very active place in a great location. Open 24 hours. We had prime rib on the first night. Not bad. I had a burger there a couple of times. Again great location and sit down bar food.

Try one of the mini cakes at Carlos Bakery next to the Atrium on Floor 6. Good Lord the one I had was amazing! Pricey, but top notch!

If you have any other questions let me know. I didnt dine in the main dining rooms so cant rate those.

I will sail the Getaway again. Great great ship.

Sailed the Getaway last June and had the BEST meals! The buffet was pretty disappointing, but started eating in the Main dining rooms for each meal really changed that, and also made for a more fantastic dining experience. The salmon burgers with the pretzel rolls are fabulous. We only cruise with the dining plan now, and had some fantastic food! The 64 oz porterhouse in Le Bistro is one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. The Japanese steakhouse has great food, but do not expect much conversation. We love moderno's cheese puffs. We actually had them brought to us every meal after. Yet if you are not big on specialty dining, you shouldn't have a problem. I thought breakfast and lunch quality and service was great. Have a blast!

Cagney's, Le Bistro and Teppanyaki were absolutely worth the upcharge! The food was really, really delicious. The servers were so helpful as well. One of my kids couldn't find anything he wanted at Le Bistro, but it didn't matter. Kids can order off of any kids menu on the ship. I think my favorite restaurant was definitely Le Bistro -- but I recommend sitting inside. All of the smoke from the casino comes down into the atrium area and that area can get crowded with people during the dinner hours as well.

We also really enjoyed Modernos. We didn't do the Seafood place that was extra (we had UDP at the time).

The only one I didn't like was La Cucina. Others don't share my view, but I just didn't like it. The service was bleh, the food was not good and they were trying to kill me with their slippery floors. My kids loved the pizza, but really, if you don't have UDP or the specialty dining included, you don't need to pay extra just for good pizza. Just my opinion.

Enjoy!

Thanks again for all of the great tips. Just wondering if those that got off the Getaway today have any thoughts? Can't wait to cruise early next year!! :D

I am just off the Getaway yesterday and have it booked again for next Thanksgiving. I was nervous about the food as well since cruising Epic I hated everything I ate. Not so with the Getaway. Everything was above par.

We ate at Cagneys, Le Bistro and Tappenyaki for our specialties. I have to say that the food in the Tropicana was delicious and not necessary to eat at the specialties to get good food.

We only ate at the Garden Cafe twice and it was really good. The tuna salad, chicken salad and fresh greens for the salad bar were great.

Next time I will do Cagneys only and eat at the MDR the rest of the time. I had the 18 oz bone in ribeye and it was to die for. I only had two bites of my side because I wanted to eat as much of the steak as I could.

Tappenyaki serves a ton and a great experience. Le Bistro was delicious.

I personally did not like Taste/Savor's area only because I felt enclosed after being in Tropicana.

I was sick 3 days out of the week, so I missed some of the MDR menu shots, but will be posting all of the dailies and menus I did get pics of.

Desserts were the only thing that I would call a total miss on Getaway at both the buffet and MDR. Specialties desserts were amazing! So I am hoping when they go a la carte in January I can go in and just get desserts.

You will not be disappointed in the food.
