We are getting a ride to the Manhattan cruiseport on a Sunday but returning on a Wednesday leaves us with nobody to pick us up.

We are trying to find a reputable car service and will pick us up at the port and take us to our residence in Long Island .

Uber?

I will be wanting to get from the terminal to Penn Station. Which is best, pre-booked car or taxi? Also would like advice on the tip!

walk across the street and grab a taxi. that is what i did when i was on the carnival miracle a few years ago. the cabs will be lined up and so will private cars. the private cars will solicit you but once you say you are only going to Penn Station they will lose interest. it is a short and inexpensive cab ride.

are you also taking a cab from Penn Station to the cruise if so just remember to go to the exit at Penn Station that states uptown cabs. there will also be a sign on the other side of the building that states downtown cabs.

How about walking over to the intrepid ? Any easier ?

Perhaps, it's easy enough to cross 12th Avenue at the W. 48th Street traffic light - with ship(s) in port, taxi dispatcher is on duty and taxi drivers have ways of sharing & "calling" in their fellow drivers to line up quickly to pickup fares ... as many are good runs to the airports, etc. Not to mention, pretty good availability of taxi-vans in the line; and, that it is a relatively short walk - and, the lines generally moved very quickly, we've done that ourselves - took no more than 5 to 10 minutes for our turns to get into a taxi (when we aren't using Carmel or getting picked up)

The Intrepid is a longer walk and I don't think you will find too many taxis waiting there, the ones passing thru are generally occupied with passengers already.

Do what's best & seemed working on that day. As for Dial7 and Carmel (which we preferred) - both of them have smartphone Apps (iOS and Androids) and we had no trouble of booking on the spot, with the nearest car being 10 minutes or less away for pickup.

Port security and local law enforcement rule and determine on any specific day on whether they will allow car service (empty without arriving or departing passengers) to come up to level 2 to meet and pickup disembarking passengers - the cruiseline, whether it's NCL or CCL, etc. using MCT have little if any say over it. East Coast departure forum has lots of good posts, pictorial guide, etc. with terminal info along with advice & tips.

Happy & safe cruising !

I was wondering because I'm using uber or Lyft.

Disembarkation morning plus early embark arrivals, especially with more than 1 ship docked at MCT typically meant traffic jams - depending on where your transportation is coming from (unlike airports with free cellphone lot for drivers to sit & wait) - cars & vans, etc. will be doing circles around those long city blocks. It's typically easier for most drivers to come up north on the Avenue or cross-town, make the right turn & go to the arranged pickup location. Had seen NYPD patrols chasing cars away or at least keep them moving to not obstruct moving traffic around the busy port/terminal area. Coming up the Avenue, it's often jammed up making the turn left on 57th. Avenue to go south - to bypass the terminal & further down to the Intrepid.

Our favorite pickup spot is mid-block on the left hand side of the W. 48th Street, around the corner from the Avenue and facing the east side of town, easy to go the Port Authority, Penn Station, head for the Lincoln Tunnel (on 11th. Avenue ... known as West End Avenue further uptown) or to the Queens Midtown Tunnel to LGA or JFK for flights, etc.

If using porter service, and they do have their own "exclusive" lane to quickly zoom you & bags thru CBP and out to the Avenue - they will take your bags across 12th Avenue to the taxi stand (of course, always tip nicely & be generous) ... I highly doubt that they will "escort" your bags to the Interpid so you are on your own entirely at the street corner of 12th & 48th.

  • 4 weeks later...
Yes....I am booking a car service (Dial 7) to take me and pick up at the Pier / Terminal.

Thanks.

Don

We decided to go both ways with a private car service .Does Dial 7 include tolls and gratuities in their price or is it separate ?

A car service in our area quoted us $139 each way including tolls and gratuities .
