browneyes7 Posted January 13, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2016 Has anyone on here taken the night train from Rome to Venice? My husband and I have booked train 774. It leaves at 10:35 pm and gets there at about 5:20 am. We've taken many trains in Italy, but never a night train. Any info would be appreciated. hkto Posted January 13, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 13, 2016 Yes it a good train as long as the right seat is booked. Private 2 berth compartments are nice (Posto Doppio Intero), 2nd class seats - not so much

CruiserBruce Posted January 14, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 14, 2016 Rome to Venice in 7 hours? That is slow. The high speed run is 3 1/2 hours...
euro cruiser Posted January 14, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) If it's already booked all that's left is to figure out how to deal with it. The night trains are nothing like the old movies, unfortunately. There's nothing remotely romantic about them. Sleeping is difficult because of all of the stops and their attendant noise: 22:35 Roma Termini 00:05 00:07 Chiusi-Chianciano Terme 00:23 00:25 Terontola-Cortona 00:45 00:47 Arezzo 01:44 01:47 Firenze Campo Di Marte 03:13 03:18 Bologna Centrale 03:47 03:49 Ferrara 04:09 04:11 Rovigo 04:23 04:25 Monselice 04:33 04:35 Terme Euganee-Abano-Montegrotto 04:48 04:50 Padova 05:08 05:10 Venezia Mestre 05:20 Venezia S. Lucia The other issue is what to do when you arrive in Venice hours before the city wakes. Here in the States (at least on the East coast) you can find a diner to eat and hang out in but in Venice your best bet is a bar (the coffee and pastry kind). Your hotel in Venice should let you leave your bags as soon as the front desk opens, even if you can't check in until the afternoon. hkto Posted January 14, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 14, 2016 Night trains serve useful purpose for some tourists. Advantages are getting two full days in both starting and ending locations and also saving 1 hotel night. There are lots of them all over Europe and they definitely have customers year after year. As I said private compartments are fine, cheap seats are not for everyone with constant moving of people in cars and worrying about luggage. euro cruiser Posted January 14, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 14, 2016 I completely understand it from an efficiency perspective, but the reality leaves much to be desired and there are attendant issues to be considered. Some of them are mitigated by paying for a private compartment but not all.

We decided to do the night train so we wouldn't have to spend another night at the hotel in Rome. We were going to leave as early as possible the next morning, anyway. I'm sure we will be tired when we get to Venice, but will hopefully sleep most of the way there! :)

We will be getting on the Pacific Princess as soon as they'll let us. Our ship leaves port at 6:00 p.m. We've been to Venice quite a few times, but hope to check in and leave our luggage to go wandering around Venice. euro cruiser Posted January 15, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 15, 2016 You'll have a few hours to kill before you can drop off your luggage at the port, but I'm sure you'll find an open bar in Piazzale Roma.
hkto Posted January 15, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 15, 2016 There is luggage hold service in S.Lucia train station. Should be open at 6am already.

We have stored luggage previously at Piazzale Roma, but it was several years ago. Thanks for the info!
