Has anyone on here taken the night train from Rome to Venice? My husband and I have booked train 774. It leaves at 10:35 pm and gets there at about 5:20 am.

We've taken many trains in Italy, but never a night train. Any info would be appreciated.

If it's already booked all that's left is to figure out how to deal with it.

The night trains are nothing like the old movies, unfortunately. There's nothing remotely romantic about them.

Sleeping is difficult because of all of the stops and their attendant noise:

22:35 Roma Termini

00:05

00:07 Chiusi-Chianciano

Terme 00:23

00:25 Terontola-Cortona

00:45

00:47 Arezzo

01:44

01:47 Firenze Campo Di Marte

03:13

03:18 Bologna Centrale

03:47

03:49 Ferrara 04:09

04:11 Rovigo

04:23

04:25 Monselice

04:33

04:35 Terme Euganee-Abano-Montegrotto

04:48

04:50 Padova

05:08

05:10 Venezia Mestre

05:20

Venezia S. Lucia

The other issue is what to do when you arrive in Venice hours before the city wakes. Here in the States (at least on the East coast) you can find a diner to eat and hang out in but in Venice your best bet is a bar (the coffee and pastry kind). Your hotel in Venice should let you leave your bags as soon as the front desk opens, even if you can't check in until the afternoon.

Night trains serve useful purpose for some tourists. Advantages are getting two full days in both starting and ending locations and also saving 1 hotel night. There are lots of them all over Europe and they definitely have customers year after year.

As I said private compartments are fine, cheap seats are not for everyone with constant moving of people in cars and worrying about luggage.

Rome to Venice in 7 hours? That is slow. The high speed run is 3 1/2 hours...

Yes, we have done the high speed train. We decided to do the night train so we wouldn't have to spend another night at the hotel in Rome. We were going to leave as early as possible the next morning, anyway. I'm sure we will be tired when we get to Venice, but will hopefully sleep most of the way there! :)

Thanks for the schedule! We will be getting on the Pacific Princess as soon as they'll let us. Our ship leaves port at 6:00 p.m. We've been to Venice quite a few times, but hope to check in and leave our luggage to go wandering around Venice.

The luggage storage in Piazzale Roma is also open at 6 AM and the location is more convenient for someone heading to the cruise port.

Thanks, Euro. We have stored luggage previously at Piazzale Roma, but it was several years ago. Thanks for the info!
