Santorini - tendering in Athinios (walkability)

We are considering taking one of the ship's (Celebrity Reflection) tours in Santorini and understand we will be tendered to the ferry port of Athinios instead of the port where the cable car is.

My question is: how difficult is it for someone who has limited mobility to get from where you are tendered in Athinios to the tour bus?

And, how difficult is it walking-wise from where a ship's tour bus would let you off in Fira, to get to the cable cars?

PS: Do all ship tours drop you off in Fira to get back to the ship or do some drop you off back at the Athinios port?

You might want to post this on the Celebrity thread too.

I was on Princess (so don't know how Celebrity does it). We were tendered to Athinios, flat level surface to walk to the bus. No problems for two elderly ladies with limited mobility. However, the bus steps were a bit of a problem.

At the end of our 4-5 hour tour, we were given the opportunity to stay in Fira or take the bus back to Athinios. We stayed on the bus, but were immediately guided back to the tender, not allowed any time to shop at the stores located at the tender dock. It was a bit of a disappointment, no souvenirs from Santorini at all.

Yes, definitely check on the Celebrity board or even wait till your own the ship to speak to someone at the excursion desk if you have limited mobility. If the bus drops you off in Fira it will be at the bus station which is a few blocks away from the cable car. Then when you get to the bottom there are several tender docks, so you might have to walk a little more depending on where your ship's tender is located.

  • 2 weeks later...

When you get off the tender the walk to the tour bus is flat and fine. However after the tour back in Fira the bus drops you at the bottom of a hill, it's fairly steep, the guide walks the group up the hill to the church, it's a narrow road and pavement (sidewalk) this may not be suitable depending on the mobility issues.
