Upsell questions

I know there are alot of Upsell threads and questions these days, so I apologize in advance in adding to them.

Quick rundown. We (my wife and I) have never done an upsell before. We are casino guests who get comped rooms and upgrade to either a balcony or mini suite (depending on what we got comped). We have been on a number of cruises, and these rooms are fine for us as it's just the 2 of us cruising and as long as we have a balcony we're good.

My wife's 40th bday is coming up in October, and as a surprise I decided to try to call the upsell dept to see about possibly upgrading for our upcoming cruise on April 1st on the Gem. I've called the past 2 weeks, and both times the woman I spoke to, who was very nice, said that they have no offers available at this time and to try back next week. So my questions are...

#1 - Is this normal? Approx 1 month out, according the website there are a number of both Suite and Haven rooms still available. From reading other threads, it seems like at this time, there should be offers.

#2 - Is her response just to us/being that we booked thru the Casino and got comped already? Does booking thru the Casino hinder our chances of getting an upsell to a Suite or Haven room?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some answers. Mike

Upsells start to work about two weeks out, and even then not always.

I called every day for the two weeks leading up to our Gem cruise and it wasn't until 4pm on the Friday, about an hour before the upsell folks close for the weekend, before we left on Monday that I was able to get a bump from an inside to a balcony for a few hundred bucks.

A month out might be a little early, wait two more weeks and dont give up if you dont get anything the first 9 tries, you never know what might happen.

I like the persistence attitude...will definitely keep trying until I hear a no. Still wondering though if (since we're booked thru the Casino) there is even a possibility, but thank you for the advice and responding

First some fare rates aren't eligible for upsells. Upsells usually arrive about 4 weeks before the cruise.

I booked an upsell on my CAS cruise last week. About 30 days prior to my cruise. Start calling 30 days out and see what happens. Doesn't hurt to try!

I called last year and I am a casino guest and was offered the OS for 1000 per person to upgrade from PH. I wanted to do it but hubby said that's 2000 off of the gambling bankroll LOL SO we didn't do it.

BTW I called 3 weeks before cruise and they said nothing available and then 2 weeks before I got the offer.

I always upgrade/upsell by calling CAS directly if I booked with them.

I tried calling the Casino and they said they don't do upsells to Suites or Haven, only to Mini Suite level. But maybe I will try them again.

And thanks all for the replies and advice. Will definitely keep trying and hope for the best.

CAS is always higher then the upsell office, They have set amounts. Take for example the BA December weekender, CAS wanted $230.00 per person to go from the M1 to the H9. I hung up and called the upsell office and they offered it to me for $150.00 per person.

Well I'm glad to see that booking thru CAS won't restrict me from trying to get an upsell offer. I would love if I could get an offer like Cathy mentioned...that would be crazy.

We're in a mid-ship minisuite...hoping to move to a Suite (or Haven but doubt they would offer that) for $500pp. We'll see.

Thanks again to all who replied, much appreciated

All dependent on when you sail and how many people have booked. I initially booked a Guarantee Balcony on the Breakaway hoping to upsell to a Mini-Suite.

Roughly 3 weeks out I had an email waiting (I was checking my email several times a day for the upsell message starting 4 weeks out).

They offered:

Haven Family Suite (two bedrooms): $750pp

Haven Spa Balcony: $500pp

Haven Penthouse: $400pp

So in total, we ended up booking the Haven Spa for $1300 per person, couldn't pass it up.

How to you get emails, or sign up to receive them, from the upsell dept? I've been on like a dozen NCL cruises and never got one previously. Then again, up until last week, I never even called the upsell dept so obviously I have been missing out.

I never signed up for any emails. Having read on here that people spontaneously receive them, I kept checking - didn't want to lose the chance.

They did ask me if it was a special event, and I told them it was our belated anniversary. I'm not sure if that put me on a "special list". I also booked over the phone originally, even though my contact was unavailable. I asked her if there was a perk to booking over the phone - she said "well it gives the Cruise Consultant credit for the booking".

I'm wondering if the cruise consultants try to take care of those who call in reservations instead of booking online. Who knows - it could all be random and I'm just lucky.
